In the early 90's, I was visiting my aunt in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the trip was plagued by a hurricane and heavy rains fell for three days. The heavy rain created some pretty damaging flooding, causing, among other things, submerged coffins to float up from the ground and out of the cemetery. One coffin settled in my Aunt's front yard. After the flood waters receded (which happened rather quickly), the county collected up all the coffins. In order to put the coffins back in the proper burial place, it was necessary to open up some of the coffins to see the name plate inside the casket. Two days after the coffins were recovered, my Aunt received a phone call. Normally it would not be necessary for those charged with matching coffins with their burial places to call relatives, however, my Aunt received a call. She was informed the coffin that was recovered from her yard after the waters receded was that of her husband who had died in an accident and was buried 20 days earlier at the cemetery 4 miles away! As if that weren't enough, she was also informed the coffin was empty!! The event so upset my Aunt she sold her house and moved to Virginia near her sister. As for me, I left Pennsylvania really quickly!

Date: 11/10/1999 5:58:00 AM    I live in Scranton, PA. There has been no flooding in the past 25 years to the degree that coffins (which are 6 feet underground) were washed up. There were incidents of coffins being washed up in 1972 during Hurricane Agnes in Wilkes-Barre, PA. I think the author is confusing some stories of the 1972 flood with an urban myth.
