GrandFather's Clock

Out of my 3 other brothers my father and I were the only ones who shared a passion for Antique Clocks. All my life we spent many hours rebuilding clocks. My dad had learned from his father who happened to work on clocks as his profession.

The last clock we restored together was one that belonged to my grandfather. I went over to my dad's garage one weekend and hauled most of the pieces of the beautiful oak grandfather clock. A few intricate parts were left with my dad because I had not yet learned how to install a sychronize this particular model clock.

I began to refinish some of the wood myself in my own garage about 4 miles away in my hometown of Robert, LA. The next weekend was going to be cool and my dad was coming over to assist me. This project was very special to him because the clock was his fathers and he was excited about passing it down. I was looking forward to finally learning the fine tuning it takes to assemble this delicate mechanism. To this day I have not been able to find anyone who is knowlegable enough to this.

The weekend came and we worked all saturday on the clock there were only a few adjustments that need to be made when my dad, who was well in his 80's really felt tired. I encouraged him to go home and told him we would finish tomorrow. He hobbled to his old truck and drove home. I cleaned up and took my wife out for dinner.

When we arrived at home about 9pm the message machine had a message. It was my mother and she sounded upset. She left a number that I was not familiar with. When I called I learned that my dad was in the intensive care unit and had suffered a stroke. We rushed to the hospital comforted my mom, and was able to speak with my dad as he was conscience.

Dad seemed scared about his condition so I sat on his bed and talked about other things. I told dad that soon he'd be out and we could finish the clock then. He apoligized that he was not able to help and promised that we'd get the clock running as soon as he could. We spent that Saturday night in the Hospital lobby. At about 5am dad suffered a fatal heart attack that the nurses could not stop. I assisted my mother with some of the paper work that needed to be done and I drove her home as my wife comforted her.

We spent most of the morning with my mother at her house. We finished lunch and decided to go back home. I invited my mom to come home with us, but she said she needed some time alone. My wife and I said our goodbyes and we headed home to make some arrangements concering the funeral and taking off from work.

It was exactly 4pm when the strangest thing happened. I heard what sounded to be chimes ringing 4 times in the garage. Not believing my ears I ran to the garage to find the clock ticking in perfect time. That has been almost seven years ago and the clock is still working. Dad somehow kept his promise on his way home.

How it changed my life:

The clock is a wonderful thing that has been passed down. I think of dad everytime I see it I think of him. I hope that my children will take the clock one day.

Date: 9/21/1999 10:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 387    We are what we believe. And if you feel that someway the clock represents a link to your father is because that's the ''truth'',no matter what anybody could tell you or think about this.
When my mother passed away, a lot of ''strange'' or ''not normal'' things happened, that was 16 years ago , then and now I keep them in my heart and I feel blessed and very lucky because now I know that this doesn't happens to everybody.
I don't believe in coincidences, I know that for there is a reason for everything, is just opt to us the meaning that we give to that reason.
So.....I feel happy for you!
P.S.Sorry about my english, but I'm not american.MDT.

Date: 3/28/2000 10:41:00 PM    I was so touched to read your story. My husband is 72 years old and is now building a grandfather clock out of Hawaiian Koa wood. He has never done anything like this before and it is truly a labor of love. Although he is making the clock for me, I will one day give it to his one and only grandchild when she gets full grown. What a heartwarming story...

Date: 1/27/2001 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 20702    It was wonderful that you could all connect on this clock. I am sure that our fathers are so proud when we take something of theirs and carry it on. Even if it is just a little piece of their wisdom. Angel Reader
