HAS ANY USM USERS RECEIVED A CHECK IN THE MAIL?

I have posted here before about being a victim of "counterfeit" money orders being sent to me and thinking I won something big! I recently received a check for $3900.00 with a letter explaining that I was chosen by their company to be a "Secret Shopper" and I could keep $400.00 of the check and Money Gram them back $3500.00. The purpose of this was to report to them my experience with the Money Gram and fill out a form stating how the experience was. I (being always trusting and naive thinking of all the contests ive entered on the internet) thought maybe it was something legitimate and although the check appeared authentic I thought "money laundering". So I deposited the check to my account to see what would happen. The bank called me the next day to tell me the check was counterfeit and they would close my account due to trying to pass a counterfeit check! I showed them the letter and they treated me like a criminal! I just wondered if any of you folks have had an experience like this and how would anyone "counterfeit" an authentic looking check with the watermarks and everything from a bank? My hopes were up again and now I feel so stupid. I hope to have replies from someone who has received a check like this? Karrie

Date: 9/6/2008 6:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    You should never ever assume that a check is real,if they want you to cash it and then send them money, that's not how contests work,as far as watermarking and counterfeiting bank checks,if you have access to a paper manufacturer,or a printing service it's realtivley easy to accomplish
Date: 9/6/2008 6:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 36850    Why didn't you ask the bank if it was real before depositing it? Especially since this just happened to you 3 months ago. No one is going to send you a $3500 check and tell you to keep some and send the rest back just for the fun of it. It doesn't happen.
Date: 9/6/2008 6:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 54444    this is a very common scam. Rule. Any time you really win anything legit you will not be asked to send any money at all ever.
Date: 9/6/2008 6:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    Not long after I moved back into this area, I received a check in the mail for $1,979.63 from this company claiming my numbers had won in this international lottery. I was supposed to deposit this check in my bank and send them the whole amount back as taxes on the lottery winnings. I was excited at first, then thought, wait a minute...I didn't enter any international lottery. Then, I called the number listed, which was a number in London, and a person who didn't speak very good English at all answered the phone and told me that I was to remit the money by a certain time within a few days, and call them when I had sent it. I asked him why couldn't he take the tax money out of the money I won instead of doing it this way, and he disconnected the phone call. I called my bank and told them what I had, and they told me that it was a scam. That a few people had already been hurt by it, and that when the checks bounced when deposited, that then gave the perpetrators of the scam the routing number of the bank account. Because a deadline was imposed that wouldn't give the recipient enough time to deposit the check and wait for it to clear, they just withdrew the money and sent the money order for the amount of the check. Always call your bank when you get something like that, and let them know what you have and they can tell you whether or not it's legit. Don't deposit anything before you find out if it's a scam or not.

Date: 9/6/2008 7:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 14754    if this has happen to you before, why did you try it again?..I dont get it.
Date: 9/6/2008 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    If it seems to good to be true it usually is...sorry it happened to you hun. :(
Date: 9/6/2008 7:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 64621    Vicki this was a check with watermarks and seemed to be legit....even the bank accepted it before it was returned.....do you get it now? Karrie
Date: 9/6/2008 7:14:00 PM  ( Chatmin-FF )   Oh my....don't ever do that!! I shred any check I get in the mail that I wasn't expecting to come to me or that didn't come in a birthday card from family. Its amazing how many low-life people are out there...just gotta watch your back a lil more sweetie! *hugs*
Date: 9/6/2008 8:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Ive never had that happen to me, but Id never try to deposit something from someone I didnt know.
Date: 9/6/2008 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    It happened to a friend. It is a big scam, most likely from Nigeria.
Date: 9/7/2008 4:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 13546    My husband recieved the cheque as well. But we figured it was too good to be true, and did a lot of research on it. And it was a huge huge huge scam. But a lot of people figured it was legit and did the same thing you did. I hope they don't close your account. Don't feel stupid, its a pretty good scam.
Date: 9/7/2008 6:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    I had this happen once to me and to my neighbor up the road from me. We both had recieved checks the same day as a matter of fact and luckily she was wanting to share her good news that afternoon. I showed her my check and we both went to the bank and showed them what we had. We found out they were forgeries and we let the Sherriffs dept handle it from there out. Never heard anything back from it but they got the letter and the envelope as well. We figured they got our addresses either online at a classmates thing, a drawbox that was set up at the mall, or a mailing list from an old defunct company.
Date: 9/7/2008 8:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 63265    It's a scam. I got a check like that. I'm sorry you went through all that. I had my back check all the numbers on the check and come to find out, one of the routing numbers was off...it didn't match up to the account it claimed to. So that went in the burn barrel.
Date: 9/7/2008 8:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 14754    Karrie, what I dont get is you cashing a check that you have no idea who it is from with out checking into it first, since this has happen to you before. the bank is trusting in you that it is real, but in the end, the find out. glad you could spread the word here to help others out.
Date: 9/7/2008 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    YOu know, Carrie, I do admire you for making this post. Maybe someone somewhere will see it, and be saved the hassle that you have just been through. There's nothing like working your petuti off, and getting nowhere, and this little ray of hope comes in, and for a moment there's that feeling of 'everything's gonna be okay', then you discover it's just a scam. I feel ya', hon. Thanks for having the courage to let us know what you have been through. HUGS
Date: 9/7/2008 9:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    ooops...I meant Karrie...sorry sweetie. HUGS
Date: 9/7/2008 10:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 62679    Oh no! Your bank should understand you are a victim and not a criminal! I hope everything gets cleared up for you :(
Date: 9/7/2008 11:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 15677    my mother in law has gotten those. its a scam, file it in the round file:)
Date: 9/8/2008 10:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    You should take the check and the letter to the police dept to help put a stop to those people.
Date: 9/12/2008 3:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 64621    Thank you all kind folks who responded. I guess it is true; "if its too good to be true it probably is!" Thank youall and have a great day!!!Karrie
