MYSTERY CHORUS OF MT. ST. HELENS

In the summer of 1967, my mom, dad and I went on a camping trip to Mt. St. Helens. This was long before the 1981 eruption....which virtually leveled the mountain. But back in the summer of "67 Mt. St. Helens was a true beauty, often called the Mt. Fuji of the northwest.

On a hot summer day we drove the eighty miles or so to the mountain. Our car strained as it ascended the long and winding road that led up to the campground, which was located at timberline. As we set up camp, we noticed perhaps two other tents in an otherwise lonely campground. After pitching our tent and setting up camp I set out to explore our surroundings. As I climbed up through the wild mountain flowers bees droned hypnotically and my heart thudded in the thin air as I crunched through the loose volcanic gravel. Glaciers probed with long icy fingers down the mountain slope. I came to a plaque which served as both a memorial to those who had lost there lives on this seemingly gentle mountain, and as a warning to the unwary. After stopping by an ice cave and drinking thirstily from a dripping icecycle, I went back to camp and talked my dad into accompanying me on a hike to the fabled "ape canyon" known for the alledged battle that took place there between a group of sasquatches and some miners back in the 1920's... but that's another story.

After a lunch of canned sardines, we left this altogether lonley and desolate spot and headed the five miles or so back to camp. That evening after supper as we sat and watched the night fall, the dark cobalt blue sky was filled with odd white spiral shaped clouds. We soon retired into our tent, climbed into our sleeping bags and were soon asleep.

Some time later we were roused by a sound. A wind had picked up, causing the tent flaps to whip about. But what caught our attention was something else. In the wind, quite distinctly, was the sound of singing. It sounded to us to be a chorus of all male voices singing in unison, and sounding very solemn and majestic. The "songs" sounded like hymns or anthems, one merging into the next, and with no pauses in between. This musical phenomenon continued for an indeterminate length of time. We talked about going out to get a better listen, but we all felt a bit unnerved by this unearthly sounding choir. By and by the wind died down to a light breeze, only the sound of the jack pines rustling was to be heard.

Next morning in the cold mountain air, we packed up and left. We didn't stay to talk with the other campers. I now regret that we hadn't. We should have in order to discover if our neighbors had also heard the mysterious chorus of the night before. As we drove home we discussed our experience. Could it have been voices from a christian youth camp located down by Spirit Lake at the mountain's base. But we ruled that out. The voices we had heard sounded very much like adults singing, and there was no sound of laughter and horseplay that one would expect from children, and these "chorusters" never took a break during the whole time. So who were they?.........angels perhaps?

How it changed my life:

It helped me gain a greater belief in higher spiritual powers. TC

Date: 9/22/1999 1:36:00 AM    ok heres my thought, good word usage and detail in your story.
that was a really short novel, that makes me wonder why you dident
make the connection that maybe it was some sort of animal, you
were camping in the wild ya know. I have a hard time believing that this was
a true happening and not just a way to get comments on your writting
skills and story ideas.
Date: 9/22/1999 10:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 221    Some people get caught up in the spelling and miss the story. Don't let it bother you at all. It was good story, thanks for giving it to us all.
Date: 9/22/1999 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 387    The story is good, I'm surprised about the second reply and I have a question for the person who wrote it:Do you know any chorus formed by animals?? Because if you do, you are the one that should write a story!!
If you don't understand what this person is trying to explain or if you just don't believe, instead of having a ''hard time'', just change website. I recommend you to go to musicbands, maybe you will find a rock&roll band formed by cocodriles! Good luck!

Date: 9/23/1999 7:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 225    I camped at mt helen once in 73 i heard the singing too
Date: 10/24/1999 3:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Comment from author: I read just recently of accounts of mysterious singing at Mt. Shasta. I think that that mountain as well as others are places of high spiritual energy.TC
Date: 11/1/1999 1:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 1270    Hey TC,
Great Story! I don't understand something though. Your family experienced this wonderful thing and you want to believe that it was maybe an Angelic or Godly presence and I can totally understand why. But for some reason my family having an image of Christ suddenly appear before us is so outlandish to you that it's like some mysterious Madonna weeping or Hindu Idol spouting milk? I just don't know where you are coming from. ??

Date: 12/14/1999 1:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    One doesn't have to be of any particular religious persuasion to believe in Angels: Hindus might call them Devas; the Muslims also have their version. Angels are totally independent of our belief sytems. TC
Date: 12/20/1999 10:31:00 AM    This story is very good. I was just surfing the web and saw this story. At first I wasn't going to read it, but after the second sentence, it was easy to say,"I was hooked."
Date: 12/20/1999 10:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 2734    Didn't reply to another story that you didn't believe in angels? MMC

Date: 1/10/2000 2:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    ...& I also believe in faeries and all manner of spirits & multi-dimensional beings. TC
Date: 1/23/2000 12:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 2945    I don't believe in fairies, I believe in angels. Fairies is something off of a Peter Pan movie. Great story TC. Are you a writer by chance? If not, then you'd make a good one. I believe there had been angels out there on that mountain. Keep believing.

Date: 1/23/2000 10:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    I wonder where those angels are today? Still hanging around the shattered ruins of Mt. St. Helens perhaps....then again maybe they've moved to a different mountain. TC
Date: 2/9/2000 7:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 2734    Are you sure they weren't singing the Doors? *grin* MMC

Date: 3/8/2000 6:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    An angel is something from Heaven, and seeing as how i do not believe in a Heaven or a hell, I do not believe in Angels, but I do believe that if you start equating, the fairies fit in there, and my spirit guides are what you could call my "angels"
Date: 7/28/2000 7:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 11263    angels are dear, yes, and i believe in em'. still good story tc.
Date: 7/30/2000 11:52:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Yes, there could be millions of 'em, for all we know. It brings to mind the old medieval question: How many angels can fit onto a pin-head?
Date: 9/1/2000 3:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    I went to Mt St Helens back in 1994. The land has improved since the erruption, however it was still in somewhat of dissaray. Anyways...this story gave me goosebumps for some reason. You have a beautiful command of the English language. This posting was somewhat poetic. There could be many possiblities. It could have been a youth group camping as you suggested. Or someone playing a tape. Or maybe you were hearing things, or it could very well have been a chorus of heavenly angels. I was not there so I don't know exactly how it sounded. This is a very interesting story and I DO believe you and your family heard something. LOVE,
Date: 9/2/2000 3:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 177    Thanks for the compliment. I think if you'd been there, you'd have also come away believing that what you had heard was something way beyond the ordinary. I've heard of other mountains (including Mt. Shasta) where strange singing or chanting has been heard.
