I'm confused by my doctors' actions....

  Author:  63572  Category:(Discussion) Created:(7/3/2008 8:21:00 PM)

I've been having bad pains for about 3 years now and I finally have a doctor who is doing something about it. I've had a bunch of xrays and mris and now we're going to do a bone scan to try and piece together whats wrong and the best course of treatment.

Since last January I've been on 3 muscle relaxers a day and for the last two months 3 vicodins a day and neither my doctor or I want to see me on narcotics long-term, but over the counter stuff doesn't work enough for the pain. Last time I saw her she put me on a new non-narcotic pain reliever that caused me to throw up after taking it every time, so I've stopped taking those.

Today she decided to take me off both of my meds that help and put me on a new non-narcotic pain reliever. The only problem with it is that I take one pill for a week, then two for a week, then three for a week, then four for the rest of the time and after four weeks on the four a day she'll increase the milligram amount steadily after that. So basically it'll be at least three months before this medicine starts to work and I have to take it CONSTANTLY in order for it to work.

Now the narcotics work when you have pain vs. being on a steady diet of pills for months before they kick in, I'd rather have the narcotics. So basically she put me on a long-term treatment today and took away all my medicines that help with the pain when I have it (the pains are so bad I can't move until the "attack" is over, which they last anywhere from 4 to 15 hours at a time and the muscle relaxers help the spasms that are caused by this)

Do you think she should have taken me off of these meds now or am I right in being confused and thinking that she should have gave me refills on the others until this new medicine kicks in? Everytime I go to the er because of these pains my er doctor puts me on stronger muscle relaxers than what I currently take to relieve the pain and without muscle relaxers I have these "attacks" a couple times a week making difficult to be able to get to work. I'm thinking I should probably email her to ask about it, but I'm not sure it's a good idea for me to be without the muscle relaxers right now when I've been on such a strong dose for so long. Thoughts???

Date: 7/3/2008 8:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 40145    maybe its cuz people just wanna to have those kind of pills just to get high, i guess she was just being catious?
Date: 7/3/2008 9:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    She has to drug test me every time she perscribes any narcotics to make sure I'm not abusing them...it's standard practice at my doctors office now to stop people who use them to get high
Date: 7/3/2008 9:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    She might be worried that you are becoming dependant on the medication.
Date: 7/3/2008 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 14909    Sounds like Fibromyalgia too me.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    Whatever your problem is hunny I hope they can find out what it is and then they can work out a good medication chart for you...you sound like what my grandaughter is going through at the moment....I wish you well sweetheart...*hugs*
Date: 7/4/2008 7:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 63725    I have fibromyalgia and I take 2 muscle relaxers a day and narcotic pain meds as needed. I try not to take the narcotic very often but there are some days I am glad to have them. Now it seems that neither are working as well as they did. So my next visit I am going to ask for suggestions. In your case I would definitely ask the doctor and not wait because when you are in alot of pain and what you take isn't working you could end up with other things happening. I will keep you in my prayers. HUGE GENTLE HUGS
Date: 7/4/2008 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    its because you are addicted to the narcotics and she is trying to help you. You take 3 muscle relaxers and 3 vicodin a day. That is a very large amount. Wait and do as she says, she is trying to make it better the way that is best for your body.
Date: 7/4/2008 11:35:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    Yes nani, I have, 8 times in fact since last august because the doctors don't beleive the test results. We know vaguely why I have the back pain and that's because all the discs in my back are either degenerated or bulging. There's two discs that are fully degenerated and the others are more than 50% degenerated, but the rib cage pain is what we're trying to figure out right now with the bone scan.
Date: 7/4/2008 11:37:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    The blood tests I've had over the past month show increased white blood cells and they managed to narrow it down to it was coming from my bones or my liver and the liver test was negative so that means its coming from my bones. She said that I have either an infection or inflamation in my bones and she wants know what it is and where it's coming from exactly.
Date: 7/4/2008 11:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    And just for the sake of it, the new medicine is not something I'll be able to take anymore (waste of $60 there) cause I had a lovely allergic reaction to it last night that sent me to the hospital so now I have to wait until monday before my doctor can change my perscription to something else. Oh joy.
Date: 7/4/2008 2:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    Even if the new meds take a long time to take effect fact is you will have it in your system and mixing meds is never a good idea.
Date: 7/4/2008 2:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 15677    have u tried an antinflamatory i was on muscle relaxers and pain meds, they didnt help much an made me loopy to boot. The anti inflam. helped alot tho and when i have great pain i can take a pain pill an be ok. u might ask her about them
Date: 7/4/2008 3:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I think I'd find another doctor.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I have pain pills also and yes I too get tested every three months when its time for refills, also they check my aic levels (blood sugar) at that time. I don't really MIND the testing cause I don't use pot or any of that stuff. But ya know you would figure after testing for TWO years and not finding anything, they would stop KNOWING you are not using anything but what they give a person. THEY need to pay the lab bill if they are so dang picky. My doctor dropped my dosage of pain meds. I didn't realize it until I had taken the pain meds for about three days and I just wasn't getting rid of my pain, so then I finally looked at the bottle seen what he did and called and chewed him out. I told him DONT you dare change my meds when I'm going through all that I'm going through right now. After all is over with, THEN we can talk about it as the ones your giving me hardly take the edge off the pain. Needless to say, he told me as soon as I ran out of them to let him know and he would refill my regular dosage sooner then the one month dose was due.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    I'm already on ibuprofen as an anti inflamatory and I'm allergic to all other anti inflamatories, so it makes it kind of difficult to find anything I can take.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I'd go back to the emergency room, as they have a pharmacy in the hosptial and THEY have to fill it for you, especially when things are closed for the holiday. I feel for you sweetie I do. I'm soon to be 55, and I say POOOOOOOOOOo to those that say, oh you will get addicted! I don't really care AS LONG AS IT TAKES THE HORRIBLE pain away. I like to be active and when my pain is at least managed then I can be active. In all my years of having to be on and off of course (good times) of pain pills I have never got addicted to them. My sister on the other hand got addicted just after two weeks of taking pain meds have surgery on her throat. She had to do stuff to slowly go off them. I know some people go get the stuff for the high, but that isnt all people, and the ones that do make it bad on those of us that take the garbage to survive the day without ripping someones head off cause we hurt so bad.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    See and that is me, I'm allergic to anything that has the same properties as asprin. I can't take none of that stuff. I wish that I could.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    Per the emergency room doctor I have to talk to my doctor on monday since I had a bad enough alergic reaction from the stuff she gave me to land me in the er, but shes the best doctor I've had and the only one who actually started doing testing for everything in the first place when the other two didn't
Date: 7/4/2008 3:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    I've been on and off vicodin for 10 years and i know I'm not addicted to it and there are times that I haven't had the money to get the muscle relaxers and I'm fine without them but my body isn't. I'm only 26, but I have many health problems that theyre trying to take care of.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    I've also been on the muscle relaxers fairly consistantly since I was 18 because my muscles are so tight naturally that they keep tearing and causing more pain and physical damage
Date: 7/4/2008 3:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I pray for you hon that when you see her again she can give you something that helps until she finds out just what it is that you have. I"m only on loritab 7.5. three times a day, plus a nerve blocker. I swear that nerve blocker helps more then the pain pills. My husband broke his neck several years ago and the doc gives him loritab 10's. More then one time a day I have to take some of his inbetween mine for it to do any good. At the end of the month I have to go back to my doctor and find something else to manage the pain as these pills are just not doing it. I have many things wrong, but the worst I think is the neuropathy in my legs. Good luck hon and keep us informed. Kind of makes one want to jump in a vat of icy hot.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Here are a couple of web sites to help you with meds.http://www.rxassist.org/ http://www.themedicineprogram.com/ needymeds.com There are more of them out there, just google for them. I have a medical card for now, don't know how long I'll have it. BUT before that my doctor that I had at the time had a lady come in once a week to help patients fill out papers to get free meds. The meds would come into the doctors office about every three months for a three months supply for a year. Then one has to reapply, but I got my meds free for a year and would have reapplied had this medical card *state* not came through. You should check and see about filling out the papers in your state so that they can deem you medically needy and then you will get a card. Mine is a spend down type card, but it uses what you owe as well as what you paid, for the spend down. So far I havent had to pay anything on the spend down and only 3 bucks co payment per prescription, and after five co payments a month you dont have to pay another co payment. The Doctor that I now have told me that if my medical card runs out to go to one of these sites, print out the papers, fill them out for him on what I need as he just doesnt have the time to look it all up, and he will sign it and send it in. Good luck hon as there is help out there.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    I'm in the process of getting a medical card. I've applied and gave them all my requested paperwork and applied for disability like they told me to do and now all I have to is wait but it could take up to five months cause they have to wait for the disability office to approve or deny me. Firstborn, you sound like you have as bad of medical problems as I do.
Date: 7/4/2008 3:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63572    But I am like you, I don't really care if I become addictied as long as the stop the pain, I'm good. The weekend will be bad though with only ibuprofen and tylenol to take for the pain. I'd take a hot bath to help with the pain but I'm still waiting for them to reporcelin my bathtub and put in a faucet in the bathtub since I only have a shower hear and it currently takes 40 minutes to get 5 inches of water in the bathtub.
Date: 7/5/2008 8:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    You should get tested for Ankylosing Spondylitis. It's severe back problems that spreads over time because of calcification of proteins...read up on it and then ask your doctor. It's very under-diagnosed.
Date: 7/5/2008 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I do have a lot of problems. I was born with what today is called Torqolis *sp* which when I was born was called wry neck. Half of a verabra in my neck is missing which causing my neck bones to be fused on a permenate 25 degree slant. Which causes bad headachs which then causes nausa cause of the pain. I also was born with scolosis. I now have diabetes which causes the neuropathy in my legs, which means that the nerves, some are dead but its like when your legs fall to sleep and the tingle you feel when they start to wake up? Well I have that 24/7 and really the nerve blocker does help. I have had over 14 surgeries. Four of them since april. Of course two of them was for cateract on my eyes the other two for my bladder. I was never suppose to walk but my praying grandmother seemed to have pull with God as I do walk. My ankle and leg was broken on the leg that is slightly crooked, *the way I was born* so yeah I know what pain is and really up until I hit 35 I did pretty good but since then its been a fight to try to get doctors to help manage my pain. I also have a small hernia and an ulcer. LOL, Allergic to life it seems. Just when I think I can take a certain meds, I end up allergic to it. I almost died from an allergic reaction to pennicillian. They had to get my heart going again. But see all of this is ok, because God also helps with my pain and problems. And I think that I've had so many things wrong and still try to be very active, just so I can tell people to keep on keeping on. Plus I know there are so many out there that has so many worse problems then I do. If they can keep going then I can. You can read about my bladder surgeries and how the hosptial almost killed me a couple of times as I wrote a post about it in april. I pray that you get your medical card in a timely manner but in the mean time If I was you I would print out those papers and get the free meds. I pray for you hon really I do and if you ever just need someone to vent to, I also have a listening ear. Message me anytime. Hugs deb
