Age of Consent in Canada – 14 years old?!

Okay, so I was surfing the web and stuff a while back and I came upon this article about an 8 year old girl in Yemen I think, or something, and she was already married to some 30 year old or whatever – very creepy and disturbing. But then that got me wondering what the legal age of marriage in Yemen WAS anyway… turned out to be NINE years old, yeah NINE! There was a whole chart of legal marriage ages, of people in different countries.

There was also a chart for the age of sexual consent – meaning at what age you’re legally allowed to have sex. Here in America, it’s 18. Now, I used to live in Canada so I went through the chart and I found it – fourteen?!!? That’s how old I am! I find it very, very appalling that 14 years old is the age of consent in Canada. KIDS my age shouldn’t even be having sex; we can’t drive, drink, vote, marry, any of that – yet we can have sex in Canada?! Let alone, this lets people of ANY age be able to have relations with us. Imagine a 40, 50 year old man with a fourteen year old child, and he is not looked upon as a pedophile. I would most definitely consider this man a pedophile.

At fourteen, we’re JUST entering high school anyway. Most of us aren’t even allowed to wear makeup, we still play with toys, ride our bikes, climb trees, etc.! A lot of people look back at being fourteen and remember themselves trying to act grown-up; (and some use this to justify why the age of consent is right) yet they don’t remember the other half of them which was still very much a kid. I mean, every single person in my entire grade at my school, still has a very childish side to them.

I also read somewhere that they were trying to get the age raised to 16 – something about the law having been approved, but not passed as a law yet. Then again, I still don’t think 16 is a great age anyway – why doesn’t the age just get raised to 18, like in the states?

What do you think? Was the age of consent at 14 a good idea or a really bad one?

Date: 7/3/2008 5:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    It is disturbing when anyone over 18 is having sex with anyone under 18. And anyone who marries at the age of 8 is kind of freaky.... But if teens want to get their groove on, then let them. It's their bodies, their personal choice..
Date: 7/3/2008 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 64497    Well, considering sexual urges do start before 18, it is normal for people to be having sex with each other. I think 14 is a bit too low, and I think 18 would be a good medium for age of consent. But as for the 8 year old being married, I find that disgusting seeing as how she hasn't even started her menstrual cycle. Or even started growing woman parts.
Date: 7/3/2008 5:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Its their bodies, their personal choice?? Are you going to say that when you have a daughter that age and you find out shes having sex? Yes, sexual urges do start before the age of 18, but thats why we are parents, to teach our kids control.
Date: 7/3/2008 5:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    Teen sex has been happening since the dawn of time. Yes urges happen, and they can get all the information out there, but it's their personal choice. All you can do is hope you steer them away from it, but their is going to be that pressure, and it's all going to come down to how their choice.
Date: 7/3/2008 5:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    I understand, but your first reply made it seem like if you had a teen, that you would just be okay and condone them having sex. Just because something has been happening since the dawn of time, doesnt make it okay. Murder has been happening since the dawn of time, and it was that persons choice to kill someone, does that make it okay? NO
Date: 7/3/2008 5:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    i should of expaned on what I said, and put it all together.
Date: 7/3/2008 5:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    Yea, but sex within the consent age is not against the law. Does it make morally right "no", but it's still legal..I Dont think it's ok to have anyone over 18 having sex with a minor.
Date: 7/3/2008 5:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Sorry AquaAngel, let me reply to your post now..lol I dont think having the age of consent at 14 is a good idea. Yes, there are teens that will choose to do things regardless, thats life..but to not look at a pervert for what he really is when he has sex with a 14 year old is just wrong.
Date: 7/3/2008 6:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 64497    You honestly think that teenagers have self control when they start making out and everything else? I'm 18 right now, and I'm glad my mother didn't believe that if she taught me control then I wasn't going to have sex. Instead she taught me about birth control, the signs of STDs, not to sleep around with everyone and their brother. I find (from personal observation) that teenagers whose parents didn't talk to them about it, or urged chastity were more likely the ones to turn out to be messing with everyone.
Date: 7/3/2008 6:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 30093    I think the age of consent is just an arbitrary number, but is in place because there obviously needs to be a cutoff SOMEWHERE. Fourteen in Canada? Well...I suppose some 14 year olds are mature enough to make that decision, but I'd imagine that most aren't. 18 is just an arbitrary number. You don't magically change when you hit 18. There are people my age (22) who still aren't responsible enough to be in a relationship in my opinion.
Date: 7/3/2008 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    I never said that teenagers would NOT have sex just because their parents taught them control. What Im saying is, its NOT okay to just have the attitude that oh well kids are going to do what they want, so Im not going to teach them right from wrong.
Date: 7/3/2008 6:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    actually the legal age of consent is up to each individual state for instance Indiana is 16
Date: 7/3/2008 7:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 12103    Thats crazy that a 9 year old girl can get married. Now I know thats a different country and all...but REALLY, SERIOUSLY, I can't even UNDERSTAND how ANYONE could think a 9 year old could be married (especailly to a 30 year old man) that just had pedifile spelled all over it.
Date: 7/3/2008 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 64514    anything younger than 16-18 is just sick!!
Date: 7/3/2008 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 56176    i was 14 ,ive been married 27 years ,almost 28 ,but i wouldnt advise it ,its rough ,you grow up before you can even be a kid,but im blessed i have a great husband and 4 wonderful kids.
Date: 7/4/2008 1:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 45630    Here in Australia its 16. But as a side issue and I agree that underage sex is wrong utterly and completly. But I just want people to think about this, it wasn't long ago maybe 60 years ago that there was no such thing as a teenager. Kids were working fulltime to help out the family by the age of 14. Now the question I have is this. Does the changing attitude of what is still a child determine what is moral? Were our ancestors less moral for making children work hard in farms for 12 hour days than we are. The same argument can be used for sex. Just throwing a thought out there. I don't know what to think but I do know that I don't want my daughter doing anything like that.
Date: 7/4/2008 1:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    It makes sense ro me that we have a taboo for sex under 18.W elive in the best of times. with a quality of life never seen in the history of the earth.Over population is a real concern.Logically the result would be abstinence in our very fertile world.9 can't be a legal, maybe just for arrange marriages, thats hard to believe.
Date: 7/4/2008 1:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 62146    Here is 16 (I am Australian)
Date: 7/4/2008 9:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    I have to take offence to your comment that in Canada a 40 or 50 yr old can have sex with a 14 yr old and not be charged. That is not the case. the law states that the two people have to be within two years of each other, otherwise it is illegal. So a 16 and a 14 can be together, a 17 and 15 etc. Please don't put in "facts" that aren't correct.
As for 14, it depends on the teen. It isn't going to stop it from happening if you raise the age to 18, look at the states and the teen pregnancy rate. You have the highest rate in the Western world due to your not educating the youth.

Date: 7/4/2008 3:27:00 PM  ( ChatminDWW )   I agree with you. age of contest should be 18.
Date: 7/4/2008 5:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63644    Sorry Magoo. It wasn't my intention to offend anyone. I just assumed that this was true since the age of consent generally means when someone is legally allowed to have sexual relations with another person. I wasn't trying to put it in as a fact; I mean, that was just my understanding of it. Thank you for clearing that up for me; it makes me feel a LOT better to know that!! :)
Date: 7/4/2008 5:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63644    Magoo - I just went and did a bit of research. I found that previously, before about March 2008, the age of sexual consent was in fact 14, meaning anyone of any age could have relations with a 14 year old and not be charged. But recently it was changed to 16 and a "five-year-gap" clause was added, meaning that a 14-year old could have relations with anyone up to the age of 19. I still don't think that's a good idea, as 19 is an adult anyway. And I am just saying - I'm not 100% sure if this is true - this is just what I've read. I don't mean to offend you if this isn't true; but I've read it in news articles, etc. I don't know if I can post the links as there may be some non-G rated content in some. Where did you get the information about the 2-year gap from? I'm just wondering because it differs from my info. Thanks. :)

Date: 7/4/2008 11:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63644    Okay... well, can you please answer where you got your info from? That was all I was really wondering. Thanks.
