It is disturbing when anyone over 18 is having sex with anyone under 18. And anyone who marries at the age of 8 is kind of freaky.... But if teens want to get their groove on, then let them. It's their bodies, their personal choice.. |

Well, considering sexual urges do start before 18, it is normal for people to be having sex with each other. I think 14 is a bit too low, and I think 18 would be a good medium for age of consent. But as for the 8 year old being married, I find that disgusting seeing as how she hasn't even started her menstrual cycle. Or even started growing woman parts. |

Its their bodies, their personal choice?? Are you going to say that when you have a daughter that age and you find out shes having sex? Yes, sexual urges do start before the age of 18, but thats why we are parents, to teach our kids control. |

Teen sex has been happening since the dawn of time. Yes urges happen, and they can get all the information out there, but it's their personal choice. All you can do is hope you steer them away from it, but their is going to be that pressure, and it's all going to come down to how their choice. |

I understand, but your first reply made it seem like if you had a teen, that you would just be okay and condone them having sex. Just because something has been happening since the dawn of time, doesnt make it okay. Murder has been happening since the dawn of time, and it was that persons choice to kill someone, does that make it okay? NO |

Yea, but sex within the consent age is not against the law. Does it make morally right "no", but it's still legal..I Dont think it's ok to have anyone over 18 having sex with a minor. |

Sorry AquaAngel, let me reply to your post now..lol I dont think having the age of consent at 14 is a good idea. Yes, there are teens that will choose to do things regardless, thats life..but to not look at a pervert for what he really is when he has sex with a 14 year old is just wrong. |

You honestly think that teenagers have self control when they start making out and everything else? I'm 18 right now, and I'm glad my mother didn't believe that if she taught me control then I wasn't going to have sex. Instead she taught me about birth control, the signs of STDs, not to sleep around with everyone and their brother. I find (from personal observation) that teenagers whose parents didn't talk to them about it, or urged chastity were more likely the ones to turn out to be messing with everyone. |

I think the age of consent is just an arbitrary number, but is in place because there obviously needs to be a cutoff SOMEWHERE. Fourteen in Canada? Well...I suppose some 14 year olds are mature enough to make that decision, but I'd imagine that most aren't. 18 is just an arbitrary number. You don't magically change when you hit 18. There are people my age (22) who still aren't responsible enough to be in a relationship in my opinion. |

I never said that teenagers would NOT have sex just because their parents taught them control. What Im saying is, its NOT okay to just have the attitude that oh well kids are going to do what they want, so Im not going to teach them right from wrong. |

Thats crazy that a 9 year old girl can get married. Now I know thats a different country and all...but REALLY, SERIOUSLY, I can't even UNDERSTAND how ANYONE could think a 9 year old could be married (especailly to a 30 year old man) that just had pedifile spelled all over it. |

Here in Australia its 16. But as a side issue and I agree that underage sex is wrong utterly and completly. But I just want people to think about this, it wasn't long ago maybe 60 years ago that there was no such thing as a teenager. Kids were working fulltime to help out the family by the age of 14. Now the question I have is this. Does the changing attitude of what is still a child determine what is moral? Were our ancestors less moral for making children work hard in farms for 12 hour days than we are. The same argument can be used for sex. Just throwing a thought out there. I don't know what to think but I do know that I don't want my daughter doing anything like that. |

It makes sense ro me that we have a taboo for sex under 18.W elive in the best of times. with a quality of life never seen in the history of the earth.Over population is a real concern.Logically the result would be abstinence in our very fertile world.9 can't be a legal, maybe just for arrange marriages, thats hard to believe. |

I have to take offence to your comment that in Canada a 40 or 50 yr old can have sex with a 14 yr old and not be charged. That is not the case. the law states that the two people have to be within two years of each other, otherwise it is illegal. So a 16 and a 14 can be together, a 17 and 15 etc. Please don't put in "facts" that aren't correct. As for 14, it depends on the teen. It isn't going to stop it from happening if you raise the age to 18, look at the states and the teen pregnancy rate. You have the highest rate in the Western world due to your not educating the youth. |

Sorry Magoo. It wasn't my intention to offend anyone. I just assumed that this was true since the age of consent generally means when someone is legally allowed to have sexual relations with another person. I wasn't trying to put it in as a fact; I mean, that was just my understanding of it. Thank you for clearing that up for me; it makes me feel a LOT better to know that!! :) |

Magoo - I just went and did a bit of research. I found that previously, before about March 2008, the age of sexual consent was in fact 14, meaning anyone of any age could have relations with a 14 year old and not be charged. But recently it was changed to 16 and a "five-year-gap" clause was added, meaning that a 14-year old could have relations with anyone up to the age of 19. I still don't think that's a good idea, as 19 is an adult anyway. And I am just saying - I'm not 100% sure if this is true - this is just what I've read. I don't mean to offend you if this isn't true; but I've read it in news articles, etc. I don't know if I can post the links as there may be some non-G rated content in some. Where did you get the information about the 2-year gap from? I'm just wondering because it differs from my info. Thanks. :) |
