Hello Everybody

I felt like that is was very important that I post this for all of your pets , not just cats and dogs. So please include your pet rabbits , hamsters or any other loving pets you have.

I would like to also suggest you remind all of your friends and relatives to do the same thing.

Any of you that would like to add any suggestions please do so when you reply.

Thanks , Clifford the BIG Red Dog

 UPDATE

 ******

  Last  night  I  kept  hearing  booming  noises  and  looked  out  to  see  what  it  was , it  was  my  neighbor  next  door  shooting  fireworks  and  they  were  beautiful.  I  did  not  know  he  was  going  to  shoot  fireworks  since  he  had  not  done  it  in  the  last  year  or  two  since  I  have  lived  here.

  I  went  to  the  back  door  to  check  on  my  outdoor  dog  Freckles  and  she  was  trying  everything  in  the  world  possible  to  tear  the  door  down  to  get  inside.  I  let  her  in  for  the  first  time  and  she  went  wild.  I  thought  she  was  going  to  tear  the  house  apart  running  in  circles  around  the  rooms.

   I  finally  got  her  cornered  in  the  room  I  meant  to  put  her  in  and  I  got  her  pet  cage.  She  was  not  coming  to  me  at  all.  She  thought  sure  I  was  putting  her  back  outside  so  I  managed  to  grab  her  and  calmed  her  down.  She  was  shaking  so  I  was  waiting  for  her  to  have  an  accident  or  a  heart  attack  or  something.

  After  a  few  minutes  of  talking  and  petting  her  she  still  would  not  move.  I  had  to  drag  her  over  to  the  dog  cage.  Once  I  got  her  in  the  cage  she  got  relaxed  pretty  fast.

    I  guess  since  it  was  so  dry  in  years  2006  and  2007  that  is  probably  why  they  didn't  shoot  fireworks.  I'm  a  good  neighbor , I'm  not  mad  at them  at  all , I  am  going  to  ask  them  to  let  me  know  from  now  on  when  they  shoot  fireworks  so  I  can  be  sure  I  take  care  of  my  dogs  better.

    So  you  all  take  care  of  your  pets  just  in  case  anything  comes  up  unexpectedly  as  it  did  with  me.

Pocatello Animal Shelter Reminds Citizens to Keep Pets Safe

July 5th is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters around the country. Pets are usually found miles from their homes, confused, disoriented, exhausted, and often times injured.

The Pocatello Animal Shelter is reminding citizens to protect their pets this 4th of July. Please take the following steps to ensure your pet’s safety:

1. Make sure the animal is wearing proper identification;

2. Don’t put your pet outside to wait for you to return home. Dogs left in backyards often get frightened and will climb or jump the tallest of fences. Dogs left on chains can snap the chain or injure themselves trying to get away. Cat owners should also take extra steps to protect cats;

3. Your pet doesn’t know that it’s a holiday. For their sake, don’t take them with you to a fireworks display. Secure your pet in the house for the night instead;

4. If fireworks or loud noises upset your pet, make sure someone stays with them. We have seen dogs go through glass windows to escape. If you wish to tranquilize your pet, consult with your veterinarian;

5. If you plan on leaving your pet in the care of a friend for the weekend, please make sure they are aware of your pet’s behavior, so they can take steps prior to the evening activities of July 4 to keep your pet safe. Make sure they know to contact Animal Control if they lose your pet, and consider making prior arrangements for medical care.

Date: 7/2/2008 7:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 63047    My poor cat is afraid of fireworks lol. Everytime he is in the windows looking outside, the neighbor always has to put off fireworks (not purposely because of the cat, just a coincidence of sorts). And they are LOUD. so my cat always runs off with a huge tail, thanks to the neighbor

(As she was pretty dang old then)....Our poor dog is such a nervous furball it's sure to make for an interesting evening.
Date: 7/2/2008 11:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 63201    My parent's border collie runs and tries to snap at the fireworks! We use those little "fountain" type things for the kids, and she always runs right up to it snapping and growling. My dad has to restrain her when the kids hold sparklers, she can't stand it!
Date: 7/2/2008 12:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    We haven't heard any fireworks here yet, so right now, my cats are safe from the noise lol
Date: 7/2/2008 2:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    I am not fond of fireworks at all, myself...
Date: 7/2/2008 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I don't like them either so when they are around I cuddle my little doggie as she is shivering, even when she is in the house!!!
Date: 7/2/2008 4:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 62841    I put my dogs in seperate rooms so they dont fight, and i play music full blast so they can't hear them and it usually works well
Date: 7/2/2008 5:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 62881    My dog loves fireworks...he chases them! I have to make sure he is in the house because the first time we ever lit fireworks after I got him he chased one down and had it in his mouth! I chased him down and made him drop it...that Scared me to death! I never saw a dog so fascinated with fireworks and gunshots.
Date: 7/3/2008 4:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    I have two dogs that go nuts this time of year. I just feel so bad for them. People! Obey the law! Leave the fireworks to the professionals!

Date: 7/4/2008 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 30229    This is a VERY VERY good post!!! I don't think a lot of people realize how those loud pops and bangs effect an animal who don't understand what is happening. Thanks for letting everyone know to help their pets BEFORE the fireworks begin!!
Date: 7/4/2008 11:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 42703    Great post! heard about a few people whos pets ran away and never came back because of fireworks.
Date: 7/4/2008 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 11176    my dog likes fireworks, and my cat doesn't even flinch at them
Date: 7/5/2008 5:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    I have two dogs- one of them is terrified of fireworks (and thunder, and backfiring cars, and I'm sure a gunshot if he ever heard one), and the other couldn't care less about them. She spent the evening chasing a bug (through the whole fireworks display, which we can usually see from our backyard but only heard it this year). My other dog, who is scared- I felt SO bad for him. Here's what I did: I turned the TV sound up a little, turned on the fan in the bathroom, and closed up the doors and windows for the night because people were letting off fireworks all night long. *I* couldn't hear any of them in the bathroom, but I'm sure he could because he wouldn't stay in there. He stayed on my heels, and even came out on the porch to sit with us when we went out to watch. He just stayed in my lap.
Date: 7/5/2008 11:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 63962    Bootie girl Sweetie Bee? That is TOOOO funny! :)
Date: 7/5/2008 1:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    Excellent advice Clifford! When we were growing-up, I had an indoor/outdoor black cat, that my Mom would keep in the house on days like the 4th of July. Last night, my dog Oskar did fine, in the house. My poor munchkin cat, Noel, was so scared she hid under my bed, crying. Poor thing! She final came out so I could reassure her.
Date: 7/5/2008 1:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    My Cocker Spaniel (Stoney) was truly gun-shy. Thunderstorms scared him pretty badly. The 4th of July was horrible for him.
