Rock The Vote, The Draft.. We Won't Be Silenced :/

I'm sure that there are some people that are familiar with Rock The Vote, a site that keeps people informed about voting, things going on with the debates, anything you want to know about voting or the election. They have forms to register to vote, and links to volunteer to protect voters rights, and monitor the polls on November 2.. I just got an e-mail from the president of Rock The Vote about the Draft.. I will copy and paste the e-mail and all those who want to help out with getting real answers for the draft please log on to Rock The Vote. Dear Whitney,

We just received an outrageous letter from the Chairman of the Republican Party, demanding that we stop talking about the issue of the military draft.

He said that the draft issue is just an “urban myth” and Rock the Vote’s effort is being conducted with “reckless disregard for the truth.”

The truth is that we still haven’t received acceptable answers from the candidates to real questions affecting our lives. The possibility of a draft is not a hoax. It’s a real issue that deserves real answers.

An attempt to silence us by any politician—Democrat, Republican, Whatever—is unacceptable. This is one of the most important issues affecting our generation. And that’s why we need to stand up and make our voices heard right away.

Below is the letter that Rock the Vote sent back to the Chairman. Please read it.

If you like what we are saying, sign our petition to the Chairmen of both the Republican and Democratic parties asking them to answer some key questions that we have about the draft:

http://www.rockthevote.com/draft

We’re not going to stop talking about the issue of a draft simply because it makes the politicians squirm. We’re not going to let Congress think that a phony vote against the draft settles the matter.

By sending thousands of email draft cards and talking to your friends about the possibility of a draft, you ignited a national dialogue. If you have any doubt, just look at the last two presidential debates—both of which included questions for both candidates on the draft.

Click here to tell both parties that we need answers to some fundamental questions affecting our lives:

Sincerely, Jehmu Greene President

PS. And please donate now to support our efforts to make the candidates address this issue. Donate to our campaign today.

______________________________________________ Here is our response to the Chairman ______________________________________________

October 14, 2004

Mr. Ed Gillespie, Chairman Republican National Committee 310 First Street, SE Washington, DC 20003

VIA FASCIMILE: (202) 863-8774

Dear Chairman Gillespie,

The letter I received from you yesterday was quite a surprise. It struck us as just the sort of “malicious political deception” that is likely to increase voter cynicism and decrease the youth vote. In fact, it is a textbook case of attempted censorship, very much in line with those that triggered our organization’s founding some fifteen years ago.

I am stunned that you would say that the issue of the military draft is an “urban myth” that has been “thoroughly debunked by no less than the President of the United States.”

I have some news for you. Just because President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Secretary Rumsfeld, and for that matter Senator Kerry, say that there is not going to be a draft does not make it so. Just because Congress holds a transparently phony vote against the draft does not mean there isn’t going to be one. Anyone who thinks that the youth of America are going to take a politician’s word on this topic is living on another planet.

By your logic, there should be no debate about anything that you disagree with. There’s a place for that kind of sentiment (and your threats), but its not here in our country. There are questions that the politicians are running away from. How long can we keep 138,000 U.S. troops or more on the ground in Iraq? What if full-scale civil war erupts there, as the CIA has warned is a realistic possibility? Would the next President be faced with a choice of pulling out of Iraq rather than institute a draft? Would women be drafted? What exactly would the draft-age be?

According to the Pentagon’s own internal assessment, there are “inadequate total numbers” of troops to meet U.S. security interests. The current issue of Time magazine reports that, “General John Keane, who retired last year as the Army's No. 2 officer, says the continued success of the all-volunteer military is not guaranteed... Keane has told Congress that adding more than 50,000 troops to the Army would require thinking about a return to the draft.”

But you want young people to believe that the draft is just an “urban myth.” I was expecting that you were going to present some facts to back up your assertion. But, instead, you have demanded that we stop talking about it.

Although the draft may not be a discussion topic for someone of your age, we have found that young people - Republicans, Democrats and Independents - are very interested in this issue. We believe in the capacity of young Americans to make their own judgments when fairly presented with the facts. That is why we are actively promoting an informed, educated dialogue. I urge you to review the “Debunking the Myths” section on our website where we address misperceptions about the draft.

Mr. Gillespie, this is a generational issue. Nothing cuts closer to the core of the very reason Rock the Vote exists. We think young people deserve to know where the politicians stand on this issue—and that a generation that could be called to service deserves more than the phony debate they are getting. We believe that it is only by asking questions—not by censoring debate—that our democracy can remain strong and vital.

Issues such as jobs, health care, Iraq, taxes, and education have energized the electorate, and the draft issue deserves the same serious treatment and candor. Blanket denials do not square with the facts and do not level with the electorate. As far as the possibility that Rock the Vote’s efforts might “decrease the youth vote,” we are feeling very confident at this point that the opposite is true. More than 1.1 million people have used our website to fill out voter registration forms this election cycle. Our street teams and ground partners have registered hundreds of thousands more. Young voters are going to surge at the polls on Election Day and make the difference for whichever candidate does thebest job reaching out to them.

Despite the strong and often strident tone of your letter, I would hope that we could both agree that honest and open debate is the surest guarantor of our democracy and liberty.

Sincerely, Jehmu S. Greene President

Date: 10/16/2004 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 1799    but how do we really know that its a scare tactic? thats my problem right there.. we don't really know for sure. there isn't anyone who is standing up to say just that from what i know.
Date: 10/16/2004 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    Do you think the terrorist in Iraq will start killing alot more in the next couple weeks in order to get Kerry elected?
Date: 10/16/2004 8:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    Kerry is the only one talking about a draft. A draft is not what soldiers want. There is enough patriotism in this country that we do not need a draft. The soldiers are paid well too. I know Bush isn't in favor of a draft.
Date: 10/16/2004 8:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49322    Hail Bush.. Kerry flip flops too much.. i don't think he quite understands the concept and responsiblities of being president.. if Kerry gets office we are all dead...
Date: 10/16/2004 8:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 1799    i think we're dead if Bush stays in office.. but yeah...
Date: 10/16/2004 8:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    How do you know it's scare tactics? Because it is only mentioned now that it is election time.
Date: 10/16/2004 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 1799    this is the kind of crap that makes me hate election time. lets just get it done and over with.
Date: 10/16/2004 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    People can keep believing there will be no return to the draft if they wish. The fact is that the military is, and has been, undermanned. In fact, it has been undermanned for over 10 years now. My former unit, which had four fully deployable platoons of security forces can now only deploy three full platoons. Navy ships are putting to seas at between 65% and 90% full billet manning. Air combat units are having to borrow deployable fighters from other units so they can deploy a full squadron. The Army is using 80% of it's combat forces just for Iraq and Afghanistan. The numbers are no longer there for sustained operations in a sinlge theatre, and Lord help us if anything should happen elsewhere that requires an immeditate response. Factual numbers on recruiting show that recruiting is down for an all volunteer force, and retention rates are declining. The writing is on the wall. Sooner or later a draft will be necessary.
Date: 10/16/2004 10:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 23610    We all have our opinions as to whether a draft will be initiated or not .... the comments alone to this post prove that. ... However the bigger issue for this post is not "do you think there will be a draft" but rather,... Where does the Ed Gillespie, Chairman of the Republican National Committee get off using veiled threats against anybody who discusses the issue of a draft? ... In Gillespie's letter to Rock The Vote, he reminded them that "As a "non-partisan" organization that enjoys the benefits of being formed under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, you have the obligation to immediately cease and desist from promoting or conducting your "Draft" campaign." .... Using the Irs as a threat to them. What the heck???
Date: 10/16/2004 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    Charlie Rangle's draft bill> http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/12/29/mandatory.military/
Date: 10/16/2004 11:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 23610    Ya gotta laugh at this gaff Bush made today speaking in Daytona Beach, Florida. He slammed his fist on the podium and said ... "After standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very plain we will NOT have an all-volunteer army." LOL. Freudian slip?
Date: 10/17/2004 6:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 47296    Lady Nyx, he spoke the truth. We DO NOT have an all volunteer force now. Stop loss put an end to the all volunteer force. The constant call up of National Guard troops has created a second problem. During the recent rash of hurricanes that hit the south, the National Guard was forced to call up troops to assist those areas hard hit. The problem was that in several cases the troops that would have normally been called on could not be used, because they were deployed orverseas. At least two of our local armories were completely mobilized after Ivan, with those not deployed overseas sent to the Alabama Gulf to provide help. The National Guard is comprised of units that are controlled by the states, but also have a federal military mission when needed. As the war in Iraq continues, it means the governor's of states impacted by natural disasters do not have the troops they can use during those disasters.
Date: 10/17/2004 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 23610    Aw...yes...Two Spirit, the backdoor draft (aka Stop Loss Policy)where they are not allowed out even when their end date comes up but must remain indefinitely. What was it that Bush said during the debate ... "They didn't view their service as a backdoor draft," he said. "They viewed their service as an opportunity to serve their country." ... Uh...right. That's why had to be forced by law to take such an opportunity.
Date: 10/17/2004 4:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 58809    The Draft IS a scare tactic that seems to be pretty popular around college campuses. I did my own research on it and found that the rumors are grossly distorted. With all that said...Bush 2004! Haha, I don't like the man--but Kerry is worse. Bigot. Lesser of two evils..
Date: 10/17/2004 4:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 58809    And Charles doesn't even believe his own piece will pass. Pfft. He just wants to get the word out there that there should be EQUALITY among the masses in serving their country. And it's "Mandatory Service Bill." Haha..will it ever pass? Hehehe..poppycock!
Date: 10/17/2004 7:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    Hail Jehmu S. Greene! Only by exercising your rights can you guarantee the continuation of democracy and individual liberty! Greene is also right, current forces in Iraq are too low, and morale is terrible! Only by increasing the number of soldiers can the USA maintain its hold, and the so-called coalition is wholly inadequate. Already the war in Iraq is looking like the first two years of the U.S. Civil War, where only the poor fought, and the rich got off scot-free!
Date: 10/17/2004 7:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    It's ALREADY been verified that the Bush will not be reinstituting the draft. I find no conspiracy or debate here...only delusion.
Date: 10/17/2004 10:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49322    delusion.. the race for president isn't over yet.. so if kerry gets pres who's to say he won't bring the draft back? bush still needs to answer some questions left open about the draft just so we are all informed... with facts not opinions and false information..
Date: 10/18/2004 4:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 47296    YC, nothing has been verified. Bush only stated he would not bring it back. He also stated we would catch Bin Laden, and that his capture was priority one. He also stated there were WMDs in Iraq. He also stated the economy was getting better, yet a look at the latest gas prices will show otherwise, especially since those gas prices have a direct impact on every other part of the economy. Nothing has been verified, and if anyone has any inkling of the need for military manpower right now, they will understand that the draft not returning can never be verified.
Date: 10/18/2004 3:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 52489    YC, there is a difference between saying something and having verification. "Verified" means you have actual proof, something you can physcially hold in your hands. The only thing that qualify in this case would be an actual document *signed* by Bush saying, "No draft". But there is no such thing.
Date: 10/18/2004 5:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Arion...I don't need a lecture, I have a thesaurus. As for this "proof" everyone is looking for...you won't get it from Kerry either.
Date: 10/18/2004 5:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Arion...sorry that came off a bit snippy on my part but I understand english quite well. I guess to make everyone happy here...I'll say I TRUST that Bush would not bring back the draft. He's shown no interest in doing so thus far. It was congress that got everyone talking about it.
Date: 10/19/2004 12:01:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49322    Then i think congress needs to answer to some questions we have about.. i'll keep you guys updated on what the chairman writes back..
Date: 10/19/2004 5:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Yes, they should give an explanation and updates on this would be good.
Date: 10/20/2004 12:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49322    Well when the chairman writes us at rock the vote back.. don't worry you choose.. i'll make sure to post the outcome...
