This is a TRUE account, as it just happend at a quarter to five this morning, Mountain Time.
Well, it all began innocently enough. My cat has this tendancy to wake me when she wants to be fed. Usually she will jump on me, or casually brush by my arm or leg while I'm sleeping. But she only does this once.
What caught my attention is the incessant licking on my feet! And if any of you happen to own a cat, or have a cat that owns you, you will know that a cat's tounge is likened to sandpaper.
Ok, so I awoke to see what she wanted. I figured that if I went to the kitchen where her food dish was, I would fill it and go back to sleep.
Problem was, she would not enter into the kitchen area. Normally she would race ahead to her dish, and await to be fed. But this time she halted right at the entrance-way.
Very odd, I thought. I switched on the lights and much to my surprise, though not hers, I began to realize why she was licking my feet so earnestly.
Water was leaking through my light fixture and onto the kitchen floor. It was'nt too bad, and I grabbed a mop, then placed a couple pots and pans to catch the drips.
After I cleaned and seemingly got things under control, I stepped outside my front door and looked upstairs to the unit above. There was a light on in the kitchen window, and a shadow passed by. That told me that somebody was up, and probably getting ready for work.
So I figured that since the water was coming from above, I might as well go and ask the person if there is a leak coming from their unit. Even though it was five in the morning.
I knocked on the door..... and at this time of day, I would have expected an answer such as "Who Is It?"
But no, the door opened and there stood this man ... naked as a jaybird.
He must have just wakened himself, no doubt. Then he realized it and jumped behind the door, with his head peeking out.
( Me, after I diverted my eyes to another direction, in the dark wee hours of the morning) "Uh.. sorry to bother you so early in the morning. I live in the unit directly below you. And there is water leaking through my kitchen ceiling. By any chance is your dishwasher, or washing machine having problems?"
(Him.. the naked guy) "Well I did notice that my carpet was damp".
(Me, still diverting my eyes ) " Ok, well if you would, check on it and let me know, ok?"
( Him, still naked) "Why don't you try and contact the property manager?"
( Me.... glad to get a chance to leave an embarrasing situation) "Will do! And sorry to intterupt you so early in the morning!"
With that, I left and went back home. Once inside my place, I soon heard noises from above. I can only guess that Him was moving some appliances around to spot the water problem. About an hour later, the leaking had ceased.
I went to work, and inspected the damage once I got back home. It did'nt appear to be that bad. But I did get in touch with the property manager to inform them of the matter. Just for future reference, so that any problem that could arise in the future as a result of this day, can be traced.
I did'nt tell the manager anything more than was necessary.
And I treated my cat to some fresh tuna. Hey, it was'nt a fire mind you. But she did sound the alarm.
