Do You know Someone who Constantly looks for Sympathy???

I'm sure most people know someone that is constantly looking for others to feel sorry for them. They offer personal information up freely and frequently not for the purpose of helping others but in a search for sympathy and they usually do this in an overly dramatic way. Even though I feel sorry for people who continuously claim they're sick, poor, abused or cheated...I also get VERY tired of hearing their claims.

I think the key to determining if a person falls into the category of the "poor me syndrome," is they have a track record of hardships, allegations against others and endless sad stories, which are almost always found to be false. They also aren't very interested in your problems or the hardships of others because they are so self-absorbed.

Do you know anyone like this and how to you handle being around them? I find it difficult to constantly be empathetic to people like this but I try to be polite. I have to admit, I don't like to spend much time around people like this though.

***** Just to clarify...I know there are people out there who are TRULY in need and in desperate situations and those people aren't the ones I'm referring to in this post. :)

Date: 9/28/2004 11:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 49763    I know several mellowdramatic people the worst I can name off hand is my cousin's ex. She was a trip WoW. ~~
Date: 9/28/2004 11:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 62732    My sister-in-law is a hypochondriac. Always has the latest illness, etc., etc. My hubby and I have realized that everytime she comes down with a new illness, there's a commercial for a new prescription on t.v.. I'm to the point I just don't listen to her whining. She's 27, lives with mom and dad, doesn't have a boyfriend, works part-time, on and on and on... *kriskris*
Date: 9/28/2004 11:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 22308    yeah i definitely know someone, my cousin Amy, she definitely fits the profile.
Date: 9/28/2004 11:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 3263    Yup!! I try to avoid them altogether. Then I get paranoid and think that every time I complain, that people will perceive me this way! LOL!
Date: 9/28/2004 12:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 59418    I don't really know anyone like that thankfully...that would drive me insane..
Date: 9/28/2004 12:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 62422    yes my biological mother is this way and my step mother is also this way. they are also mentally insane and should learn to act like normal human beings in suciety. cyndi.
Date: 9/28/2004 12:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 52746    Yeah, I know someone who publically displayed their "rightful" pain over a situation yet neglected to tell listeners the full story so they could hear for themselves that the situation itself was extremely difficult for all concerned and that person was not deliberately hurt out of spite.
Date: 9/28/2004 12:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    People like that drive me crazy. I would write a longer answer, but I'm too depressed, since my parents abandoned me as a baby on the steps of the local orphanage and I have diptheria and my house burned down the other day. *Sigh*
Date: 9/28/2004 12:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    Someone please put me out of my misery....
Date: 9/28/2004 12:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    LOL@ Dark Crow's and Canoe's comments! :O)
Date: 9/28/2004 12:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks for all the replies EVERYONE, it's good to know I'm not alone on this one!
Date: 9/28/2004 1:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 48858    Just ignore them. I had a friend in highschool who constantly cried at lunch because she wanted the boys to feel bad for her. It was incredibly annoying. We all ignored her, including the guys, and eventually she stopped. However, be able to determine the right time to listen and the wrong. Sometimes people really just need a listening ear. It'd probably be a good thing to find out if these people are just looking for one person who cares enough to let them unload here and there.
Date: 9/28/2004 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    Those people are so stupid.. CONSTANTLY there's some sort of travesty going on.. they don't want ADVICE either.. they just want someone to feel bad for them, that's the worst part. My cousin's like that.
Date: 9/28/2004 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    I have a friend like that, she's one reason that my phone has caller display!
Date: 9/28/2004 3:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Good points Lievout, I agree.
Date: 9/28/2004 3:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Rika...yep, it's so unfortunately true isn't it!
Date: 9/28/2004 3:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    LOL@LSR...yep, I've got a friend like that too. Now I just need caller ID! ;)
Date: 9/28/2004 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    I know quite a few people like that. Sometimes you just want to put them out of their supposed misery. -
Date: 9/28/2004 3:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    LOL...yep you sure do! ;)
Date: 9/28/2004 4:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 25756    I have a friend like that, and whenever you try and help her by giving her some good advice, or showing her the good side of the situation, she interrupts and talks right over you! It's awful!
Date: 9/28/2004 4:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 25756    Ooh, wait, was I just comlaining? Lol! ;)
Date: 9/28/2004 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 52155    There are quite a few on this here website...
Date: 9/28/2004 5:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 26363    Yes! I call them emotional vampires! If I'm not succesful in diverting the conversation then I will politely excuse myself, but in saying that you get those that call you constantly or come by at all given hours seeking sympathy. The last person I knew like this finally tipped me over the edge. I just finally had to tell her as it was and that I didn't think we could remain friends anymore. She said "Well!" and hung up on me and I never heard from her again! Thank the stars because just a few minutes talking to her and I would feel so depressed that I felt like killing myself! I know exactly what you are referring to and frankly I just haven't the time of day for it.
Date: 9/28/2004 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    Yup, I know a couple people who's like that.
Date: 9/28/2004 9:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    Eww...There was a girl I was friends with and I didn't realize it at first but she had so many pity stories. Sure, bad things happened in her life, but I honestly didn't need to hear about it EVERYDAY. She was also a hypochondriac. Well, we're not friends anymore because she annoyed the boogers out of me. So now she looks for sympathy from all my other friends...Cheese, give me a break...
Date: 9/28/2004 9:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    She also tried to become me...She stole my words, stole my clothes, my family...Pretty creepy stuff. I called her my parasite, because in all actuality that's what she was.
Date: 9/28/2004 9:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    She still calls my house...but...Caller ID ROCKS!
Date: 9/28/2004 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 42515    Yep...and I ignore them because they irritate me
Date: 9/28/2004 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    It gets so old...
Date: 9/29/2004 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 58308    A so-called friend of mine, Ellen, is a sympathy jerker. I've got to where I stay away from her so I don't give her something to cry about. I get tired of hearing the "woe is me" crap that pours from her lips.
Date: 9/29/2004 8:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    LOL@AgentQ...that's okay...I don't consider your comment complaining at all! :)
Date: 9/29/2004 8:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Eddo...right you are! ;)
Date: 9/29/2004 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    MorningGlory...Yep, I know what you mean. I've got a few friends like that and I do get so depressed after talking with them. I wonder if they realize just how much of a downer they are?
Date: 9/29/2004 8:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    AMERs...wow, that girl had some problems. It's unfortunate that these people are trying so hard to get attention but they end up pushing people away from them by being this way.
Date: 9/29/2004 8:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Thanks to EVERYONE who responded here. I don't feel bad for feeling this way now, at least not as guilty about feeling this way! LOL :O)
Date: 9/29/2004 8:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Zeebs...LOL, yep you're so right.
