Ugh... Cross country running

Ugh I think I made a HUGE mistake by joining cross country running, i mean i thought I should join a sport for once and I THOUGHT cross country running would be an easy one but its alot harder then I thought, today was my first practice and we had to run 3 miles, I felt like passing out on the first mile, the coach (my boyfriends dad) thought I would be good and wouldnt loose my breath as fast because I'm really skinny but he was wrong, I dunno I feel like quitting especailly since we have a practice every day this week and next wednesday we have a four mile race, I'm scared that I will blow it for the whole team, The thing thats stopping me from quitting is that I dont want to be a quitter and I dont want to seem like I couldnt do it, but I cant take it already and its only my first day being on the team =/ ! What should i do!? Anyone got any tips?

Spring is coming

Date: 9/27/2004 7:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    if you haven't been working out, it takes a couple weeks to get into shape. Give your a body a chance to adapt to the activity before you cop out. Also, I'm a big fan of easing into a routine-- I mean, it's a competetive sport, so you have to push yourself, but there's no need to feel like death at the end of each practice-- I call that over-exertion. Starting out, you shouldn't try to keep up with the fastest runners if you can't-- find a level where your heart rate is up, but you aren't out of breath (you should be able to have a conversation while you're running). After a couple of weeks your body will get used to it and it won't hurt so much anymore. And then you try to push it a litte further each time to get your endurance up. Also, you need a 15 minute warm-up period before you start exerting yourself.

Date: 9/27/2004 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    wish I could help....I gave track a shot my freshmen year, gave it about a month and quit cause my body hurt and I just couldnt do it....that and at the time I had one really weak ankle which was giving me fits....so it wasn't just that I wasn't in shape or anything. I'd give it a little more time....see if you can get into the swing of things. If after a while you still feel you can't do it...then atleast you gave it a shot...and if you want to give it a shot again next year spend the summer working out and building your endurance :)
Date: 9/27/2004 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    talk to your coach and give it a try before you quit this is only the first day at it... give it a few weeks it might just get easier as the time passes
Date: 9/28/2004 8:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    Hang in there a few weeks. Running is hard work but if you can make it the first few weeks then you body adjusts to the work. In fact, you may begin to view it as fun.
Date: 10/18/2004 4:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Give it an honest effort. You'd be surpised what you can do with a little conditioning...and conditioning takes a little time. Hang tough, little buckaroo. You may like yourself later...Best of luck in whatever you decide. Write on...:)
