It actually depends on what site you go to. Some sites are sponsoring music, so you can get it for free, but they're paying for it and other sites, only let you listen to it there.  |

I don't know I'm confused too. If you have or make a yahoo account, you can go to launch.yahoo.com and you can listen to music for free on your very own little radio station thing and rate the songs, and also watch music videos. :)  |

I think basically any song that is copyrighted you cannot upload to someone else...I am not really sure though but if you have the cd it is not illegal to copy it onto your computer or have a copy of it yourself...  |

it has nothing to do with the number of songs that you download. Downloading or uploading *any* amount of copyrighted material without the owner's permission is illegal. Some sites, such as Apple's I-tunes are licensed to distribute music (notice it's usually for a fee). If the song that you download is copyrighted, but the website has a license to distribute to you, it's legal. If the song is not copyrighted, then downloading it is legal, no matter what. You need to check with regulations on the downloading service. If you see stuff in there about the owner not being responsible for material distributed through it's service, or if see any warnings against trading copyrighted material, then it's likely that your downloading of copyrighted music there is illegal. |

as I side note-- you can generally count on the fact that downloading copyrighted stuff on file-sharing services, where you're not getting it from a central, licensed distributor, but rather from other users such as yourself who usually don't have licenses, is illegal. |

As a general rule, I don't download any music because I don't want to get myself wrapped up in a legal battle. Some are legal yes, but I just don't take that chance. |

To date no one has ever been charged with downloading copyrighted material. They were sued for sharing copyrighted material on their computer, and no one actually went to court for it either. All the cases so far have ended in settlement up to $2000. If you know how to change your IP# it would decrease your chances of getting sued, which are actually extremely low anyway.  |
