Witches grave: a true place in New York

My friend went to a superstitious place called witches grave. Lengend says that if you or anyone you are with takes anything from the grave you will die a horrible death on your way home. The man she was with decided to push his luck and take part of the steal beam fence around the grave without telling anyone. Tehy got in the car to go home and the car was dead. It wouldn't start. My friend got out of the car to look aroung without knowing her friend stole the beam. A lady in a long black dress was standing on the other side of the field, and suddenly came floating toward her at a fast pace. She was shrieking and my friend was so scared she froze in place. The man that took the beam thought quickly and stuck the beam back in the ground around the grave site. The woman disappeared, the car started and everyone went home scared stiff.

BLACK AND WHITE
Date: 5/28/2000 9:37:00 PM    I know this sounds like a typical story. But there is a real grave site near Berne, NY in the Helderberg Mountains. The woman (name?) who is buried there was presumed to be a witch in the 1800's. When the townfolk buried her (without burning?) they put a 3' iron post fence around her grave stone. I was told this story and went to the witch's grave once in 1980's - but I didn't screw with it - that's for sure. I believe one post was removed from the fence at the time. The story I heard about this place is that the guy who took the post kept it in his trunk and had a bad accident after getting a lot of hints that something awry was about to happen. Anybody know of this story? More importantly - does anyone have directions to the red, unpaved, clay roads that lead to the graveyard where the witch lies?
Date: 8/1/2000 6:34:00 PM    i beleive in witches,i was told by a friend that i might be one.i want to learn more about them,do you have any information on how i can get in touch with a real witch or speak with one?
Date: 8/13/2000 5:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 13803    that was a good story
Date: 9/16/2000 9:05:00 AM    Certain elements of the story are true. I am currently working on a book about "the witch's grave" I have visited the cemetary several times and it is unfortunate that the site was desecrated by vandals. They broke the gravestone into pieces and stole every one. Then they proceeded to steal the iron fence. Just FYI there is nothing unusual about iron fences aroung graves they were quite common in the 1800's. I don't feel it is a good idea to post directions to the area on the web, sorry. I can promise you a wonderful story that WILL have it's own site on the web. I hope to complete this early 2001. Please be patient and give me the opportunity to share the complete story with you. (It is strictly NON-Fiction) If you do find your way to the cemetary please don't damage it any further or use it as a party spot. Why not place some flowers on her grave instead? Let her rest in peace. I will keep you posted on the upcoming book.

Date: 10/5/2000 2:23:00 PM    I LUV STORIES LIKE THIS BUT U REALLY NEED SOME GOOD AND SCARY ONES
Date: 10/19/2000 8:25:00 AM    My four year old sister would not even believe this story, come on.
Date: 10/25/2000 7:59:00 PM    can you tell us where in n.y this place is?
Date: 10/26/2000 7:08:00 AM    I have a feeling I know where this grave is. I have heard more incidents about this place. A man took the stake from the grave home with him, put it in his barn while he was doing some barn work. Alittle while later, the barn was torched and the man was unable to get out and died a horrible death. Then there was another man who took a stake with him, and died in a motorcycle accident on the way home. The people of the town
people that i know and trust remember these two
incidents and only some of them knew about the withces grave.
Date: 11/4/2000 9:13:00 AM    the witch is real of history. In many year ago my grand-grandmother was little girl and on halloween night and she saw a witch flying with her own eyes.but now not anymore the real witch already dead long time ago.so, i trust my family to telling real stories about real witches.Witch was died in Salem,New York of this history.
Date: 11/4/2000 3:08:00 PM    Did they see or hear anything strange while going in there? And do the whitchs come out on certain days? Like when there is a full moom.
Date: 11/5/2000 7:42:00 AM    The story you are referring to told by your great grandmother takes place in Salem, NY. It is NOT the same story as the witch's grave. The woman in the story above is not buried in Salem NY. The Salem NY story appears to be rather unsubstantiated. You can read about it at www.ithaca.edu/library/Training/hotrt.html
In answer to the second post question about witches: to whom are you refering - real witches or spirits and ghosts? I did not experience anything unusual when I visited the grave. We did have an interesting experience at another related site in the area. You'll have to wait to hear about that in the book. Stories about other experiences there abound. Who knows if any of them are true. If they are who is to say they have any connection to this woman's grave. I am not aware of increased hauntings on full moons. REAL witches often celebrate on full moon. Why? Because the moon is the Goddess and witches are 'drawing down' this energy. In order to understand true witchcraft you must leave behind the world of the literal and enter the symbolic one. The moon is the symbol of the divine feminine. Stories about witches flying are in reality talking about astral travel. The Native Americans call this a "vision quest".
The author (not of the story above - just to clarify)
Date: 11/10/2000 6:11:00 PM    This is a good story. I know the person who posted this original article, and he truly believes in the witch's gravesite near Berne, NY. He tried to take me there once, but alas, the weed overcame his sense of direction. I do believe in this story. In communique to another respondent, yes, true witches do respond to the full moon - drawing from its inherent power. The Goddess is with us all. Blessed be!
Date: 1/13/2001 6:04:00 PM    I too have been to the Witches Grave in New York. It is said to be the grave of Eva, a young German woman, who was burried face down. Apparently from what I have been told, this was common practice from wherever her ancestery was from. If this is the same one, it is a short distance from Altamont. When I was a teen, we did end up hitting a deer on the way home, but that could be totally common since it is the "hill towns" outside of Albany and there is ALOT of deer. As for taking something from anothers grave- SHAME on you and your friend!!! Hope no one disturbs your slumber! Also with regard to the lady in black, that is just bogus, or your eyes playing tricks on you. I have been up there many, many times, have even had all night bonefires up there and also am a PRACTICING WITCH. I have never seen anything like what you claim after all the hours I have spent up there. If you really want to know more, call the small local newspaper that serves the hill towns called The Altamont Enterprise, they did and have done many articles and research on this urban legend over the years, and will confirm what I've told you, yet with much more detail. In the mean time : STOP disturbing grave stones!!!!
Date: 1/13/2001 6:16:00 PM    I just posted the last site, and to the individual who is publishing the book I would be very interested in reading what you have discovered, I also have alot more info for you if you are interested. How do I reach you? You should seriously consider contacting The Altamont Enterprise and The Guilderland Public Library if you haven't yet done so. Many of the locals would surly love to tell you their stories, but be careful- they like to strech the truth!!!
Date: 1/18/2001 6:47:00 AM    Hello to the person from Altamont. I'd be glad to discuss my work with you and see what info you have. All the people I have met in the area have been wonderfully helpful. I have spoken with the town historian and several others. I'm focusing on the historical piece right now. Since one of the most important artifacts was destroyed, I could really use some help. I'm searching for a good, clear photo of the gravestone or a rubbing. Or a piece of the original stone itself. I have a translation of the inscription in German. It reads "Separation our fate and reunion our hope"
