I could get stuck with a needle and get infected with HIV working in my nuring career and that could ruin my life-- but do I get paid millions to do my job? NO. And neither should they. They get paid all that money when they go pro and they don't even finish their schooling half the time. Idiots running around with a bunch of different sized balls-- they should know there's gonna be accidents!! LOL Just my opinion..... |

It takes more skill to be in the medical field than any sport-- more physical, mental, and there's another one here-- spiritual. Yes they perform well but so do most others in their field of interest. They should not get paid that much. Tax hikes for the rich would help our economy and maybe some of the state and national deficit. Just my opinion...once again... |

I don't think anyone needs $16 million a year contracts...their doctors are paid for by insurance, and even at say $200,000, if they ended up with an injury that threatened their career, they would still find a great job as a commentater or actor if they so desired. I think sports in general carries too much weight in the world...and only half the population even cares! <<not fact, just my insights. |

Oooh what a boring world we would have if everyone was working and there was no form of entertainment. You see for these people to do these things they have sacrificed many things to earn the big bucks. They practice sometimes for 12 hours per day on their skills. Play for a couple of hours on the weekend in an exercise which is just as agonising as two days solid worth of work for some of us. There are very few opportunities as commentators and refeerees in these sports as most of these are done by professionslas these days anyway. To entice these people into the world which we want them for we have to pay the big bucks. I enjoy seeing them and think they deserve everything they get. |

that was before endorsements ... thats all the article said. i know they do salary capping in Australia, an AFL team got done for it last season. i am just saying i think it should be a bit more controlled ... but really in the end what can you do? The sporting entertainment industry is big bucks and they know it. thats why clubs will pay more and more money to get the big name stars and THATS when pay packets get out control. Take the Wayne Carey situation ~ he is getting a pretty decent pay packet his FIRST season with the crows (and being out a number of games, mind you) simply for who he is ... 'King Carey'. I am not saying he isnt a good player, i am saying that i think clubs also need to be care when they do such things cause they a have other crucial players that have been around the club for much longer and have prooved themselfs and may not be on as much $$$ |

I.E.: Doctors, nurses, surgeons, preists, pastors, firefighters, police officers and all those that actually do something MEANINGFUL for the betterment of society, would make MORE than someone who works for selfish means and is paid unGODLY amounts of $$ for playing games, making music or creating art. I say that if there is this kind of money to toss around-- it should go to charities and foundations to help find cures and antidotes. or to the community to clean up 'bad' areas. There are much better ways to 'waste' money than on over exaggerated people-- they're no different than anyone else. Just a different profession, they should not get paid more. It's the people who fight in the wars past and present that should be getting this money. They actually put their life on the line. |

Well it's a no wonder that not just anyone can become a sports star. There isn't exactly enough team sports to go around to make you a sports star. Should they be making that much? Absolutely not. Should they be compensated for what they do, of course, but $15 million to throw a ball around a field is a bit extreme. They get $15 million and all of their expenses are paid for travel and then they make millions in advertising deals with major companies like Pepsi and Coke. That is ridiculous. I don't doubt that keeping in shape and competing with the big boys is a tough job. ONE SEASON and MANY of them have made enough money to last them an entire lifetime. Now tell that to the man that gets up everyday and goes to work busting his rump just like the next guy and can barely keep food on the table. When it comes to famous people, whether it's actors, actresses or sports figures it is a lot to swallow to work just as hard as they do and watch them spend $300,000 on a freaking toilet seat. |

No, they do not get paid too much. They run Americas economy. Without people getting paid that much they would not play, therefore sports would be over and the econom down the drain. They also show up to work everyday, or week, to thousands of screaming fans looking to watch them play, they have to be good. They earn where they are through hard work like anyone else, get over the pay people they deserve it because they worked hard ALL their lives to be their, and I doubt people would pay to see open heart surgery. Not that that is less important, its just that what the people want to see is sports, so they will get paid more. |

I believe they do. Actually...what I mourn are the days when players played their games for principally honour...pride in the jersey they wore etc. Take Rugby for instance...back in the day, the ultimate aim here in NZ for a Rugby player was to be able to pull on that black jersey, wear that silver fern and stand proud as one of the few...as an All Black. Nowadays its about the money...the drive is for the cash. And when Rugby players are already millionaires...already have multiple cars and multiple houses...then I think sometimes the drive isn't as great...at least for the seasoned veterans. But when the drive was purely to represent ones own country...when the drive was pure pride and achievement rather than financial reward...our All Blacks were formidable. Even as an Australian ya have to admit that. The All Blacks absolutely were a dominant force on the world rugby scene BEFORE professional pay came into the picture. Now we have been reduced to having to once again play in competitions to earn a place in the Rugby World Cups...when previously it was a given NZ would be there because we ALWAYS came up in the top levels during the Cups. There is something sadly lacking now in the game...here in NZ anyway...and that, I believe, is passion and honour. No amount of money can buy that. Peace, |

I believe they make too much. It has gotten to the point where it has a major effect on colleges. A lot of kids get scholarships to play college sports, and the opportunity to get a good education that can help them down the line. Some of them though, before they complete that education, are lured into major league sports for the money, forgetting all about their education, or deciding to put it on hold. They see all the money they can make, and nothing else matters. If they get injured in their second year, and can't perform, then they are stuck without a job, and an incomplete education. I can think of a lot of jobs that are way underpaid for the work they do. teaching is the main one. If danger is the criteria for high pay, then I should be making a million a year. It is very dangerous doing steel work, especially when you are walking a steel beam high above the ground. Police officers should be worth at $2 million a year. They go out everyday not knowing if today is the day they will meet that drug crazed idiot looking to kill a cop. Soldiers in combat should be worth even more. Personally, I like NASCAR. When those athletes want more money, then they go out and win it. Their pay really is based on their performance. |

I believe they get too much money. Doctors and their assistants, teachers, police officers, firemen -- these people should get $16 million dollar contracts. The doctors help us to heal, teachers teach these little idiots we have running around here (sorry but it's true), police and firemen risk their lives for us daily. Athletes aren't risking their lives for us. I think that, if Police Officers made more money, they wouldn't be so privy to being corrupt (Louisiana and Chicago have the most corrupt police forces in the country). I think that if we #1 spent more money to educate the teachers and #2 pay them better, we wouldn't have all these horrible deliquents running about. But Americans are like the ancient Romans; all we care about is being entertained. I suppose that's why I sing in a band, lol. ~The DreamGyrl~ |

I agree with Sun Angel and Kelsey. Doctors can save people's lives! Would someone rather be alive (longer) or watch some people run around on a field or court or whatever. I dont know about you but I think that I would rather be alive and I am very thankful for all of those doctors out there. Some of whom go to work in the wee hours of the night and work for a day or two at a time not getting to see their families, but doing an important job. AND what about teachers? Half of the people in the world wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for teachers! We would all be dumb people sitting around on our lazy bums all day!! What about getting paid for the risk of injury? Doctors risk getting diseases and many other illnesses every day! There is a risk of injury in pretty much everything that you do. People should get paid for drivin a car because there is always a chance that you could get in a car accident. You could be paralyzed or something and that could end your career. What about school sports and the minor leagues? They don't get paid millions of $$ because they could get hurt. Maybe there is a great high school football player out there with a chance to become pro but he gets injured and never gets the chance to? Did he get "paid" for that risk? NO! I'm sorry but I think that teachers, doctors and the other many important people in this world should be getting paid WAY more then they already do.Why do we live in a world where the important people are not recognized for the outstandin work that they do? That is my opinion.Good Post. ~*Peaches*~ |
