American Idol........Down to the Wire!.........~SpaceCase

Tonight we were entertained by this year's cream of the crop. After Joshua Gracin's honorable discharge last week, only the top three finalists remained. The producers wrote out the guest judge and theme tonight and wrote in an interesting twist regarding song selections for the night.

Ruben, Clay, and K-Lo, formerly known as Kimberly Locke ;), were set to sing three songs each. The first pick was randomly selected by fishing around in a glass bowl full of song titles. The second was a song the judges felt either represented the finalists, or showcased their finest qualities, and the final song was the trio's own decision.

Here are the three performers, their songs, and my thoughts on their stunning performances. I must say, it was a pleasure to sit back and enjoy a bit of the best! All in all, the remaining three blew the judges away tonight! Simon voted to have Ryan Seacrest up for nomination so that the three super-stars could stay and the world would be happy!

1. Kimberly Locke - (random) "Band of Gold" - She is so soulful! This performance was as golden as the ring she sang of, solid and strong! All the judges loved it, and I loved it when Simon told the booing crowd to shut up so he could finish what he was saying! (judges' pick) "Anyone Who Had A Heart" - I wasn't familiar with the song, but enjoyed the emotion she put into her crescendos and decrescendos! The judges continue to rave about her steady improvement and her strength in the battle for Idol position. I agree. (her choice) "Inseparable" - My husband just kept goin', 'Yeah, she's doin' this song good' Which really means, beautiful, perfectly executed, stellar performance, worth it's weight in the music industry. As of tonight, she has become the Queen! And based on these performances alone, she's the one to beat!

2. Ruben Studdard - (random) "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" - Tonight Ruben seemed tired, as if the whole Idol process was taking it's toll on him. In this first performance, I already began to worry about the fate of our velvet teddy bear. The albumn had a few scratches on it tonight folks! (judges' pick) "Smile" - I do love this song, but didn't necessarily agree with the judges on the perfect Ruben song. He did a sweet job and has a sweet smile, but I would've really dug Al Green's "Let's Get It On". (his choice) "If Ever Your In My Arms Again" I do love this song...probably about as much as Ryan Seacrest apparently does. Anyhow, what a sweet choice! It kinda made me look at Ruben with even more respect than before, and I was sure glad he sailed through most of it. He ended rather bumpy, but I really think his voice is in need of a break! I don't know if he'll ride on to the final show next week or not.

3. Clay Aiken - (random) "Vincent" - What?? You know...Starry, starry night...oh I don't know the words, it's a Don McClain song. Anyhow, it was just ok. Paula said he flubbed the words along the way and I was already snoring by that time. (judge's pick) "Mack the Knife" - They say he needs to shed the lounge act and then give him the perfect lounge tune! LOL Well, this boy lit the stage like a fire cracker with this old time hit and definitely made everyone forget his own memory lapse in the first song. "Unchained Melody" - Warning, following comments may not be suitable for Clay's fans!!!!!! What the heck did he just do to that gorgeous song! Like Randy, I didn't care for the arrangement, but worse, I couldn't wait for the butcher to end the song and exit stage right!!! Ok, I said it...now throw your tomatoes!

I am not even going to attempt to guess who's gonna go tomorrow. And I'm sad to report, that keeping tonight's performances only in mind, I would have to say Ruben needs to pray real hard...RIGHT NOW!

Date: 5/13/2003 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Thank God, I was wondering where you were and if you were gonna post this hehe.. going to read it now *hugs*
Date: 5/13/2003 6:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    oooooooohhhhhhh....did you just dis my clay?!?! *faints* LOL he's amazing no matter what. the first song he did forget some words, but he pulled it off. ruben does seem to be wearing down a bit. and kimberly did a terrific performance. it's gonna be a tough call...but i am still gonna have to vote for clay.
Date: 5/13/2003 6:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    I loved Ruben tonight, and I loved K-Lo (lol-gotta love that nickname) too. Clay really didnt appease the need to hear him, as he did last week, at least for me. I hated.. ANd I mean HATED the way he sang Unchained Melody... I guess its because I noticed a lot of the flaws in it, being a singer too, but man, he really didnt approach the song with his voice well.. If I had to say one to be worried, it would be him, but then again, he is popular.. I hope Ruben doesnt get out, but if it happens, I know he will have his own CD in no time.. Everyone loves him, even if they HAVE to vote him off. lol.. He sounded like he needed to clear his voice on his last song, but during a performance of that stature, it would have been impossible-to say the least. Kim, totally "brung" it tonight.. She had me singing with her.. lmao.. I loved the show tonight, and I agree with most of your review.. Right on SC! *hugs*
Date: 5/13/2003 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i gotta admit, the thought of clay leaving tomorrow did cross my mind...for a BRIEF moment. lol. i'll be crushed if he's out. but, unfortunatly, i guess it is a possibility. *sniff* it wasn't his best performance...but he looked cute doing it lol
Date: 5/13/2003 6:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I'm still calling and voting for Ruben, but all and all I have to agree with your post. They all were wonderful and I had to agree with the judges when they said all three of them were good and this is going to be a tough decision to make!!!! Love,
Date: 5/13/2003 6:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Cage, hun, look at it this way, if the off chance he does get voted off, you know- I mean KNOW, that he will have a CD out within a few months.. Then you will be able to have Clay EVERY night, instead of just Tues. & Wed's lol *hugs*
Date: 5/13/2003 6:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    you are so right Amanda. lol. but i will still cry if he goes.
Date: 5/13/2003 6:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    awww *hugs* If he goes, I will probably cry too.. I cried when Josh Gracin was voted off.. Not because I would miss him, but because the end of it when he was singing to his little Girl, made me want to say ,"No! let him stay!" LMAO
Date: 5/13/2003 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i know! i thought that was just beautiful. i honestly don't think his heart was in it anymore. he missed his family too much. (which is completely understandable)
Date: 5/13/2003 7:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    Kim was great tonight! Ruben sounded good on his first song, his second was HORRID and his 3rd was ok. He is wearing down, I cant help but wonder if his weight is a contributing factor. Clays first song STUNK peeeeeeeeyeeeeeeeeeeew! I loved his second, but I found the choice very very funny. Lets show America youre not a lounge singer but give you a song that you just know is sang in every lounge LOL. I hate the song unchained melody anyway, so that one was a rough call for me. "MY" order for tonight is K-Lo (lol) Clay then Ruben. Another great review SpaceCase!
Date: 5/13/2003 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 21762    This is something that has bothered me for a while...Ruben is not as good as everyone makes him out to be. And what makes me more angry is that no matter how bad he does, which tonight I thought it was about as bad as Keith, the judges still give him good coments. I've said it from the beginning and I will say it again, the judges are rigging it for Ruben to win in order to keep the races that win equal. I know you don't want to believe it, but I think it's the truth. My faveorite from the get go has been Kim and tonight she was absolutley amazing. Clay was also awesome...I wish Ruben would leave so much, but let's face it...he couild sound like Keith x 100 and still win all because he's Ruben... My pick to go tomorrow - Kimberley...I hate to say it but people don't like her because the judges have said things to get us addicted to Ruben...urhg. It hasn't worked on me.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i do agree 5EOL. i don't think ruben is as good as they make him out to be. he is good, but he could have used some constructive critisism at times...but they never gave it to him. K-LO (lol) has gotten MUCH better...which has me worried for my beloved Clay. i also agree that mac the knife is like a total lounge song. but, again, he was adorible. he did it good too. KEITH!!!!!!!! LMAO i wouldn't go THAT far. NOBODY is as bad as that guy. gotta give him credit for auditioning though. LMAO.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    5, Im sorry, but Im not that Gullible.. I Like Ruben, because I have a trained ear, and most the time, he is right on the ball. I agree that the judges most the time, bow down to him.. but hey, thats alright, because in the end it will be America that picks.. I, for one, can really give a rats rear what the judges say.. I base my opinions on what I hear within their music.. Not their looks, not what they are wearing, and definitely not what the judges think. And I know that most people do the same too. If he wins, Great.. If he doesnt that still Great, because no matter who wins, you know, They All three will make it in the music world hehe.. So it's just the title of "American Idol" that they will be getting as a plus.. *hugs*
Date: 5/13/2003 7:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    have I told y'all lately that I love ya...and I write all of these just for ya!! Ya feel my heart with gladness, you take away all my sadness, ya make me laugh with what ya do!!!!!!! Ok, anyhoo, Amanda, I teared up when the soldier sang to his daughter...reminded me of Vince Gill a few months back and Garth Brooks, a few good years back! Could you believe Quintin Tarantino was there?!! WOW!
Date: 5/13/2003 7:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Lmao SC.. Awesome Reply! I love reading these review posts.. they make my night And I dont remember if I saw Garth brooks doing that, but I was all teary-eyed seeing Josh hold his little girl like that.. I was like OHH man, That is so sad.. And Omg.. It was So funny! I was like,"Ooh look mom Quinten Tarantino is there!" and she said,"Uh, who is that???" lmao.. I thought it was hilarious.. I had to explain it to her.. lol
Date: 5/13/2003 7:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    I felt all smart, trying to explain that one to her.. lmao
Date: 5/13/2003 7:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    WOW~ I just love the honesty coming forth tonight. DMK, I also wondered if his weight contributed to Ruben's worn edges tonight...and could he even make it through an entire 45 minute solo performance under the hot lights without passing out. I see tonight as your chance to make things come out as they should...cast those votes for Kimberly...and Clay, sure, but definitely Kimberly. 5EOL, I totally get where you're coming from and those exact thoughts about the race-factor crossed my mind when Simon didn't tear into Ruben tonight. It's obvious to see who the producers would like to see win.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    I wouldn't go that far either with Keith, Cage! lmao.. I have to give props to Rube, because he does have a smooth sounding voice, but I do agree they kinda baby him a bit. I dont let that sway my votes any though.. lmao.. and SC, Yeppers, Im honest.. lol.. I like to be able to state my opinion.. roflmao, as you might have seen many times.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    LOL wow, your Mom didn't know Quintin Tarruntino...she must be a really classy lady...and I mean that...no sarcasm, I swear! I'll have a royale with cheese please!
Date: 5/13/2003 7:37:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   Clay did terrible during his first song, I was shocked. But I think his second and third were much better. Oh well, I guess anything can happen tonight
Date: 5/13/2003 7:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    LMAO... No she didnt know.. She is pretty classy, but then again she hasnt ever seen Pulp Fiction! lmao.. I think she would get sick on that movie anyway.. especially the part with the guys in the car.. ewwww.. lol It was pretty funny though..
Date: 5/13/2003 7:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Dani, yep, I cant even make a prediction on this one, because its going to be SOOOOOOO close... I dont want to see any of them leave though.. I agree with Simon on that one.. Maybe we can vote off the producers or something! LMAO
Date: 5/13/2003 7:40:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   I think if anything the favoritism could hurt Ruben in this competition. It is a shame because it isn't his fault and didn't ask for it, but I think a lot of people are upset with the way they promote Ruben.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:41:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   I know Amanda none of them deserve to get the boot. It will be hard to say what happens next week, anyone could win. I think it was pretty obvious Kelly was going to win last year, but this year it isn't obvious at all
Date: 5/13/2003 7:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    *clay, clay, he's our man. if he can't do it, no one can. GOOOOOO CLAYYYYYY* it was so awesome to see quintin tarantino there. it's amazing with some of the people you see in the audience. ruben did seem to tire out tonight. he sounded alright...but not as good as usual. must have been a long night for him. i think Keith should be our next american idol!! LMAO he said it himself "i am unique, entertaining and i think i am the next american idol". well...he's unique anyway. LMAO
Date: 5/13/2003 7:42:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   OMG Amanda I cried when Josh was voted off last week too LOL. I thought he deserved to go, but that was just heartbreaking.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:43:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   GO KEITH!!! lol
Date: 5/13/2003 7:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    this year is VERY tough. they were all really good tonight. but if clay does go...i will be here crying
Date: 5/13/2003 7:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    LMAO Cage!! That would be a different twist to the show.. they could always make a spin off for the worst singers in America.. I know he may do well there.. lol.. Hey, what do you guys think about the Juniors Show that will be on in two weeks?
Date: 5/13/2003 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Yea I know Dani.. its because all Three Rock! They are all individually great, and I cannot see the definite winner.. I was suprised by K-Lo though, she has really stepped up her game, and she could just hit one out of the park, if she has the chance to keep bringing it.. ya know? *bites nails* May the best one win
Date: 5/13/2003 7:48:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   Cage don't worry, even if Clay does get voted off he will have some kind of music career. He has an amazing voice! tonight was not his best night at all, but he has shown he can sing. I would like to see him get to the final two atleast, but we'll see I guess
Date: 5/13/2003 7:50:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   I've only been able to get in 3 votes tonight, I can't imagine how busy the lines are goingto be next week!
Date: 5/13/2003 7:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i think the junior show will be cute. i occasionally watch "Americas most talented kid" and it's really cute. some of those kids are amazing. ya know, i DO think they should have the "worst singers in america" contest. the final will come down to keith and me. LOL. (i can't carry a tune to save my life...i am not as bad as keith though, LMAO) yes, clay will definitly get a deal somewhere. he is awesome!! but, i will still be in tears if he is voted out.
Date: 5/13/2003 7:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Danielle, I have to disagree. I was pulling for Justin just as hard as I was Kelly...they were equally talented in my eyes...kinda like this show, except Clay and Ruben haven't really improved or appeared to work as hard for the Idol position as Kimberly has. All three deserve to be here this year...no matter who goes tomorrow...unless the begin flipping off the audience and spitting on the judges, I am sure I will be in tears, LOL
Date: 5/13/2003 8:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    lol Dani.. I hate Alabama Phone lines, because I havent been able to get 1 vote in at all.. Grrrr. that ticks me off.. lmao
Date: 5/13/2003 8:03:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   I thought Justin and Kelly were both good last year, but people seemed to favor Kelly more so thats why I assumed she would win. I wouldn't have minded if Justin would have won though. I don't really mind if Clay or Ruben win this year either
Date: 5/13/2003 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    I hear ya Amanda, I have been trying since the show went off and still never did get through!!!
Date: 5/13/2003 8:05:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   Colorado phone lines stink too lol
Date: 5/13/2003 8:06:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   Did anyone see Kelly on Oprah? I didn't think she sounded that great. She sounded like she was screaming the song too much. thats just me though
Date: 5/13/2003 8:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    yea Cage, I saw that show... I watched the finale of America's Most talent Kids.. And was pretty blown away by some of their talents.. lol.. I think the girl that won deserved it, but they all deserved more for just being able to perform in front of America! lol.. I dont know if the spin off of American idol, will catch my interests.. I just cant see small kids taking the critisisms well..
Date: 5/13/2003 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    Danielle, I saw it and I thought the same thing. She looked like she was hurting herself...LOL.
Date: 5/13/2003 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Yea, me too SC.. I know whoever gets voted off tomorrow, I am going to cry for them... Lmao..
Date: 5/13/2003 8:11:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   LOL Angel, I think thats why she has so many throats problems. She would sound better if she relaxed a little
Date: 5/13/2003 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Sorry Im slow.. I suck at multitasking.. lol.. Sunshine, I know, I HATE Alabama Lines.. Dani, I assure you, our phone lines are worse.. its hard to stay connected to the net with DSL just imagine how it was when we had Dial up.. lol *hugs*
Date: 5/13/2003 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    Yeah she definately would!!! I was thinking that myself while watching it, I was telling the TV screen to "relax"
Date: 5/13/2003 8:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Oh, Man, I forgot to watch Oprah today!!!! URGH, was it good Dani??? lol
Date: 5/13/2003 8:21:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   Yeah Amanda they didn't say too much though. I was a little dissapointed. They just talked to the contestants and the judges
Date: 5/13/2003 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Im still mad I missed it though I forgot all about it.. lol
Date: 5/13/2003 9:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 13897    hey, you know what i say? i think they should set up votes on-line. then no nasty telephones! =) oh and I was just blown AWAY with Clay's second song. but I'm still voting for Ruben. =) I don't think they're babying him, I think he has an awesome voice and stage presence. Tonight was not the best, though.. But everyone had their "bad nights"..
Date: 5/14/2003 12:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    my choice is clay... that smile those eyes... he has me sold*LOL*
Date: 5/14/2003 7:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    I like both Ruben and Clay myself.....but I see Kim leaving tonight and it coming down to the guys......(well a least I hope lol) I do think Ruben will win tho...even if Clay has been my "man" through out the contest...
