Advice for my dog.

I don't mean to gross anyone out but I need some advice on how to rid my pet of ticks! I saw this huge mat on his back this evening - he is an outside dog I let him run free cause we live in the country and I don't like having him tied up anyway. Anyway underneath of this mat was an infestation of ticks! Huge small medium. Totatlly disgusting! I picked them off and drowned them in a bottle of peroxide much to my dogs disapproval- his skin was really irritated. I put some frontline on him and that is supposed to work within 24 hours to kill waht I didn't see/find. Here is the main part of the problem because there are woods around us and because he is long haired the ticks will keep getting on him. He also likes to go and stay with a family who lives above us that has a PACK (somewhere like 30 or so)of dogs - they don't get them shots and they don't have them fixed or anything! I know the frontline will continue to kill the ticks for up to a month but he will continue to be infested! I also really don't want him going to visit that other house because they don't take care of their animals. Last year (he usually only stays the summer) he came back skin and bones and had hotspots all over him. Aside from tying him up does anyone have any suggestions? I have thought of an electric fence but I have a huge yard and digging up that much ground to lay one down can be expensive. Thanks

Date: 5/13/2003 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    my only suggestion would be to tie him up....we put our one dog on a tie out chain that is attached to our clothesline..this way he can still run a bit....
Date: 5/13/2003 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 62023    My dogs are outdoor dogs and I have them on Sentinel. It's a flea-tick-heartworm pill that I give them once a month. It works like a charm, although it's a little expensive. There are lots of other flea-tick pills and shots available at the vet. You will need to dip your dog too. If there is a Petsmart or Petco near you, they have a lot of good dips (zema is a good brand). Ticks can cause anemia and Lyme disease among other things, so you really need to do all you can for your dog. Good luck!
Date: 5/13/2003 4:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 58334    My dogs are all outside dogs as well and get covered in loads of them. I know what you mean. I really don't thik there's much you can do to stop it. We put drops on our dogs which stops them for awhile but you have to keep doing it. Also for the roaming problem, we bought this post you put in the ground that comes with a collar and it only lets a dog go so far. It's like an electric fence but it's easier and cheaper. It's just a post you put into the gorund. If you need anymore help, please message me :-) ~nimiwae~
