Hey I was reading this post. And I saw someone use this saying... "Beating a dead horse". Now my question is. Who or where did THAT come from? That's really gross and mean. Did they use to beat dead horses?? Just got me wondering..Any of you know??

Date: 5/13/2003 10:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    Could it be "beating a dead horse"??
: If so, the phrase describes a futile situation.
: For instance, I think I am beating a dead horse when I try to coax my teenage children to give up smoking.

"flog (or beat) a dead horse. Though he supported the measure, British politician and orator John Bright thought the Reform Bill of 1867, which called for more democratic representation, would never be passed by Parliament. Trying to rouse Parliament from its apathy on the issue, he said in a speech, would be like trying to 'flog a dead horse' to make it pull a load. This is the first recorded use of the expression, which is still common for 'trying to revive interest in an apparently hopeless issue.' Bright's silver tongue is also responsible for 'England is the mother of Parliament,' and 'Force is not a remedy,' among other memorable quotations. He was wrong about the Reform Bill of 1867, however. Parliament 'carried' it, as the British say." From the "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997.)

Date: 5/13/2003 10:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    I know what it means. I was asking where it came from. Thanks Keth
Date: 5/13/2003 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    no prob, I copyied and pasted from a website asking about "flogging a dead horse"
Date: 5/13/2003 12:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 52155    yoo Joooooe!
Date: 5/13/2003 1:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 600    It originated during the "old western" times when people rode cross country in an attempt at finding their fortune. The long trecks tended to wear on the horses, which were their main mode of transportation. When they died, the frustration of being left afoot caused many a cowboy to beat their already dead horse....Ok, not really, but it sounded logical enough right? lol
Date: 5/13/2003 1:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 49498    I beat a dead horse everyday

Date: 5/13/2003 1:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    LOL, it does sound bad but kethria makes sense..i'm with you coryann, most of these 'sayings' used to be apt.like, throwing the baby out with the bath water and such ---there was really risk of it ! LOL ---so yeah i'd wonder if they didn't really beat dead horses too LOL...so what about the saying you can lead a horse to water (or is it a mule) but can't make him drink?????????????????? looks like if he was thirsty he'd by god drink! 8-P
Date: 5/13/2003 3:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 51635    If the horse is dead it wont carry you any further, no matter how much you beat it...
