One of our children spoke frequenlty of 'Old Grandpa', from the time this child learned to speak. It was so common we never thought much of it, until a few really weird coincidents have made us wonder: This child repeatedly told me I KNEW who 'Old Grandpa' was, and where he lived, that I had driven past where 'Old Grandpa' lived. We pulled out pictures of all our relatives, hoping to identify 'Old Grandpa', with no luck. Then one afternoon, when our child was 4, I overheard a conversation with a neighbor's child. Our child told the other that he used to live w/his 'Old Grandpa', that he had went there when his father died, and that his name was 'Nicky'... I stayed silent, but grabbed a piece of paper and wrote down what he had said. Later, when I spoke to my mother on the phone about it.. she said not to discount it, that in doing the family tree as I was, I might stumble upon some information which coinsides with what our son had said. (I was like, 'uh-huh...yeah...'! , not really putting much into this) A few days later, I was driving the three hr drive up to see my mother. About two/thirds into the trip, I was thinking over what she had said, and what our son had been saying all this time, etc. etc. I thought about the name Nicky, and the father dying, and that Nicky had went to live w/his grandfather... then suddenly I remembered doing some years back research on the paternal side of the family, where a brother to our direct ancestor died 'early' leaving a widow & five small children, one of whom was named Nicholas. Right on the heels of that recollection came another: Nicholas went to live with his grandfather, also named Nicholas. The moment I got to my mothers, I told my friend & family about this.. they were speachless (except for my mom, who asked me if she could call 'unsolved mysteries' , of course, I said NO!) But if that were true, and if that had ANYTHING to do w/what our son had said, then he told me HE had been where 'Old Grandpa lived!' Standing there with! them, I realized that he had INDEED been there... when he was 9 months old, my mom and I had driven to the 'old homestead' where our ancestor, Nicholas (the grandfather) had settled in 1856!! We had driven out there, and stopped and looked over the land, and my son was with me the whole time! I couldn't wait to get home to share this with my other children & husband (who is a HUGE skeptic about these things, and remains so to this day) When I got home that night, I went to my file cabinet and pulled out the file on the particular family I have been referring to. I just sat there & stared at the charts, (while my husband looked at me while shaking his head - thinking I'd gone off the 'deep end'>.. and one of my other children went to shower. A few minutes later, I realized I had been staring at another very coincidental item.... and ran upstairs, banged on the bathroom door, and asked my other child to look at the paper & tell me what she saw.... she recognized IMMEDIAT! ELY what I was referring to: the birthdates were the same for our son and for Nicholas..with 135 yrs between them!!! We have not 'solved' this, we don't want to exploit our children, or draw unwanted attention to our family... but it IS strange... and we wonder if it's just all 'coincidence'... or more... How it changed my life:It's hard not to wonder what it's all about , or if it has a meaning, or if there is something I missed in researching the family tree.... we don't believe in reincarnation... so it's difficult to know how to 'label' this experience. But it's made us realize that there is more to our lives and our existance than we might realize.
