I went to see it one night. We saw something, but I don't believe in it or anything else like it. I know that there was something there though. It was strange, and It really made me feel wierd though. It was off in the distance, and it was not even on the path of the road. It was more up in the trees. I thought it was a 4 wheeler, but then we drove down the road, and there was no where to have a 4 wheeler where we saw the light. It did split too! Strange, but everything has an explaination. I would like to understand it more. thank you for giving your story, it helps to know others have experianced the same. One time, it was right on the back of my friends car, following them. It then flew off. How much of that is true, i don't know, but the swear it. The actually cried it was so scary, and the are grown men. Well, 14-20. Thank you for your story though. Some scientists believe that it is fox fire but they have researched it and found no gaseous deposits anywhere near to casuse the spontaneous combustion. I would like to see it though. To all you unbelievers this is a true story. |
| Date: 11/21/1999 6:55:00 PM To response number four, I first saw the Joplin (AKA Hornet Spooklight) in 1969 although having visted the site many times, my only contacts with the phenomena were in 1969 and 1980. While it is possible to see something most every trip, close examination will reveal headlights on highway 66 in Quapaw Ok. When and if you see the HSL, it is something you will never forget! I have over the years, aquired many eye witness accounts and am preparing to publish some of my findings. We are still actively investigating as time permits. | Date: 12/27/1999 9:09:00 PM If you can get to On I-44. You need to take the Seneca Exit. Also known as Highway 43. You will turn south down 43 and follow it past several gas stations the you will pass a lettered highway off to your left. About 500 feet there is a small county road (coyote)off to the right. You will follow this road for about 2 miles and until you see the second farm road (GUM)off to the right. You will follow Gum road until it T's off at state line road. Turn Left.. This part is tricky you will go close to a mile you will see a house off to your left and a little road to you right (FR E50) Farm Road E50. If you have not been there in a while. Take it Slow.. You will miss the turn.. But after that you are now on spooklight road E50.. BE SURE TO go about 1/2 mile down the road the PULL OFF THE ROAD AS FAR AS POSSIABLE.. the Oklahoma State Highway partol that area.. | Date: 4/10/2000 3:36:00 PM I have experienced the amazing and absolutely unbeleivable "spooklight". I ventured down that way in my junior year of high school with some friends of mine. We sat very quietly for 3 to 4 minutes before seeing anything. As the light appeared it had an orange glow to it. It seemed within a few seconds to begin moving closer and to become more of a red color. One of my friends became nervous and since we had heard that it would disappear if noise was made she started to talk. The light disappeared almost instantly. We sat for a few more minutes in silence and the light reappeared slowly. She then opened the door of the vehicle and it once again disappeared. I have been told that the only way to see the light is to sit in complete silence. I believe this is true. It is by far the most spectaculsr sight I have ever seen. I would encourage anyone to view it if possible. Thank you so much for giving directions to the sight on your page for I had forgotten how to get there and have wanted for some time to take some of my friends to see this. |

I lived in Springfield MO, and my brother went to Joplin with his friends to debunk the spook lights and he came back a scared believer. He said all the hair stood up on his body like energy was flowing through him and everyone that was with him saw the lights. They said it was passing right through their car. I never got a chance to go, but I know my brother wouldn't lie. I would think that since it is a light source in a predictable place someone would have researched and explained it by now if they could. - iammerane  |
| Date: 8/15/2000 8:31:00 PM I have been going to see the spook light for years! My parents used to go back in the 60's. It is real and it is pretty cool!! They told me stories about the museum(shack) that used to be there and about some guy that used to be at the shack that would sing a scary song about the spook light "spook light, spook light where are you tonight!". They also said that changed roads once in the late 60's or 70's. I haven't been able to see it in the last several years. It seems like the only times I have seen it be very active were on clear nights. But, I have seen it split and dance around the road...it is quite a show!! |
| Date: 8/28/2000 9:31:00 PM When I first went to the SPook lights, I was extremely skeptical. As a matter of fact, I went to the old road to make out with my girlfriend. When I saw it I was really unaware of what I was looking at until I realized that there were no vehicles coming towards us. Then when it went in directions no man made thing could have done I realized "Hey, that was the spook light?" I was a little unimpressed until I learned about it and how there is no real explaination for it. Then it sort of freaked me out. |

| Date: 9/3/2000 12:33:00 PM Just about a week ago I seen the spook light with a friend of mine. We were just sitting there and then we seen a light. It got really bright and then really dim and seemed to almost disapear and then it would flash again and move around. Well, after all the time we spent to see it, we ended up leaving after seen it--it scared us that bad. Well there is a much easier way to get to the spook light, not to mention the bridge after gum road is now washed out. You go down I-44 till you get to the Seneca turn off and go south down 43 highway till you get to a road called Iris Road. Go down Iris Road till you come to a T and then turn right. Go down this road (i think it is called state line road) till you get to the second dirt road. Turn left at that dirt road and you are there. |

Well, i am maried to a man who is from Hornet, MO. He lived around the spook light all his life. When we started dating, the spook light had come up in conversation one night. I had been out that way many times before, and had never seen it. He then told me i was looking for it in the wrong place. He said for some reason it had seem to move east. so we drove south on 43 highway from interstate 44 to Irish Road or also known as BB highway, then turned east or left for those from the city lol. to 86 highway. From that point on to NN highway it can be seen pretty much anytime after sunset. It doesn't appear really close. When you do finally see it you wll swear it's just car headlights coming. But i have never seen car headlights change colors, split into 2 or float up like that. We have made several return visits with our kids over the years, and you are as sure to see it to, as old faithful wil blow on time. Now this is our opinion, but we believe the "gas" theory, after all there are endless miles of caves and caverns under our whole area. I don't know how old this web site is, but my dad just took me to the spook light last night. We didn't have the priveledge of seeing it. My mom saw it when she was in high school though so that is a cool story. I live in Neosho,Mo which is 20 minutes south of joplin. I could give you directions if you email me back!!! I must have been to the spooklight at least 50 times, although you never know when or if you will see the light. I must admit the first time I saw the spooklight my Dad took me there after we had been to Joplin one night, I was scared to death. I saw it that night and may times after, and I must say it is the most amazing thing that I have ever seen! |

| Date: 11/24/2000 1:42:00 PM It was on Halloween night, me and my boyfriend decided to go see the spook light. We had no idea what to expect so are intentions were varied. We got the directions as we were passing through Joplin. As we finally got down the old road were the spook light road was, we went down about a half of a mile. We turned off the car and sat there for about 10 mins. We saw this ball of light getting closer by the second, we sat still as we thought it was a car. My boyfriend turned on his lights and the ball of light had disappeared. That scared the crap out of me. He turned his lights back off, we guessed that it wasn't a car. We sat quietly for about 2 more mins. and then the light appeared behind us but only then it split off into two balls of light. That's when we knew that that was no car that was the spook light. It scared both of us then, so about that time we thought we would leave...........Jeannie |

The Light is truly odd and unique. But there are other strange things down that dark country road other than a light. There is a place called "Lovers Leap" the turn is located about the middle of Spook Light Rd. I saw somthing that night that will always be stuck in my head and nightmares. I can't tell you what it is because I can't explain it. 4 of my friends and I thought we would be brave and try to get in close contact with the Light. We got set up on the road known as the Devil's Prominade and began wondering through the woods. We came across Lovers Leap and we smelled something horrible, like somthing dead. We took out or flashlights so that maybe we could see where the smell was coming from. My friend Larry whispered "What the hell is that"! On the other side of the creek, on top of the cliff we saw the most haunting figure. Somthing was crouched down, its long arms flaring in the air. We couldn't make out what it was. We shined our flashlights on it. We made eye contact and we were frozen where we stood. The thing was in the shape of a human. Maybe 7ft tall. Long hair all over its body. Shredded meat was hanging of its long fingers. The smell was either coming from that thing or the dead deer that lay at it's feet. Suddenly the the Freak jumped from the high cliff and into the water below. We never talk much about that night and we have never returned to that spot. after learning more about the spook light I found there have benn other sightings of things like this. I would never believe this if I didn't see it for myself. Obviously it is not harmfull, but i never want to see it again. If you are ever on Spook Light Road in Joplin, and you ever here strange growling or you ever smell death in the air, follow your sences and you might witness your worst nightmare. believe me, it will follow you for life. |

Hi! I am from the Mo-Kan area and I have heard about the light. I myself have never seen it but my father has and my mother is a skeptic. I do know a little about the light but not a lot. There was a musem but the person who ran it died and the place was abandoned and is now a shack. I have heard the story of the light but I'm not sure if its true because somethings fit and other make no sense at all. This is the story. A Mother lived in a farmhouse not far from where the light is seen today. The Mother had two children a boy and a girl. There was never mention of a father but a father was never mentioned at all so I always assumed she was a widow. But Anyways. one night the mother went to check on her children while they slept and as she peeked in the door she discovered her children missing. She searched all through the house and never found trace of them. Then she heard them screaming outside. So she grabbed a lantern and ran frantically outside searching for them. The mother went missing that night as well and nor the mother or her children were never heard from again. The Light is said to be the ghost of the mother and her lantern searching for her kids. I don't know how much of this is true or not but One thing that does make sense to me now is the monster mentioned. The kids could have been screaming because of the monster and they never made it out of its grasp. But I am curious to see it and My dad will take me some time soon.
