Should Bar Owners In California Have To Obide By The Non-Smoking Law? (Hawk)

As some of you may already know, California has a law that states you can not smoke in any indoor establishments. There was a post about this a few days ago asking who agreed with the law.

Now what I would like to throw out an example of bar establishment owners. The majority of the customers who frequent bars here are generally smokers. The patrons have to go outside to smoke a cigarette. I don't know about the other legal age drinkers on this site, but I enjoy smoking more when I have a few drinks in me. The bars aren't losing business because of this law, but I feel the owner should set his/her own rules. If I owned a bar I would definitely allow people to smoke in my establishment.

America is a free country and I respect and obide the laws. But, how can the owners have freedom if they are being told people can't smoke in "their" establishment? Especially, when cigarettes are a legal substance.

Date: 6/22/2001 2:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 25183    I think that there should be smoking in bars. I am a nonsmoker, but I do enjoy a cigarette now and then if I go to a bar. It goes hand in hand with alcohol for me. In Arizona, smoking is not allowed inside, but bars are the exception. DoodleBug
Date: 6/22/2001 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    I think any bar any restarant or for that fact any establishment that whants too should be able to allow smoking. Simply put up a sign stating that smoking is allowed inside and the environment may be hazardess to ones health. Any one who is afraid that breathing some second hand smoke will kill them is then free to walk on down the street in the polluted California air to another place that does not allow smoking.

Date: 6/23/2001 4:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 27046    We have had the same law in Ny state for at least 10 years now. However private establishments are bale to use thier own discretion with it. We can smoke in bars and restaurants that are owned by certain companies. Most of your fast food chains like Mcdonalds or Burger King don't have smoking. But the Olive Garden allows it in thier bar but not thier restaurant. So they have left most of the discretion up to the owners

Date: 7/2/2001 12:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 38474    Private property, owners should set the laws in their own establishments.........Racquie
Date: 10/2/2001 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 1334    I agree it should be up to each owner. I think that would make everybody happy. In the town I live in before the law even took place there was a bar that did not allow smoking inside guess what they were just as busy as the bars that did allow smoking and there was a place for everybody. If I owned a bar or any other buss. I would be very against the lawmakers telling what I could and could not do with in my own building especialy when the very thing they say we cant do in our building is smoke but yet the owners can sell cigs. it is a legal substance. I just dont understand but I guess that is because I am a smoker. ...
